Manteo, NC (May 16) - Old Dominion sophomore Jeff Eure went 3-for-5 with threeruns and three RBI tolead the Monarchs (33-20-1) to a 16-11 victory over #8-seed William &Mary (29-24) May 16 inthe first round of the CAA Baseball Tournament at Coy Tillett Sr.Memorial Field.
ODU sent 14 batters to the plate in scoring nine first inning runs totake a commanding lead andheld off the Tribe to advance in the double-elimination event. TheMonarchs got to the ninthbatter in the lineup before they suffered their first out in the biginning, while pounding out sevenhits - six of them singles - during the first.
The Tribe battled back with three runs in the second, and three more inthe third, but theMonarchs continued their offensive assault with three-run innings oftheir own in the fifth andseventh to put the game out of reach. Junior shortstop Tim Hummel, theCAA Player of theYear, was 1-for-3 with one run and four RBI, while senior Joe Troilo(3-for-4) and senior JasonGreiner (1-for-4) each knocked in three runs for ODU.
The teams combined for 33 hits and 27 runs in the game, as all 18starters recorded at least onehit. ODU junior starter Shawn Weaver tossed 147 pitches to pick up thewin after working seveninnings, while allowing 15 hits and 11 runs - 10 earned - with one walk,and nine strikeouts.
Senior catcher Brian Rogers led the Tribe at the plate, going 4-for-5with one run and three RBI.Junior third baseman Stephen Booker and freshman center fielder MichaelBrown added three hitsapiece for W&M.
Top-seed Old Dominion moves on to play the winner of JMU/VCU on Thursdayat 4:00 p.m.,while William & Mary will play the loser of ECU/GMU Wednesday at 12:30p.m.
