Smith Pitches Richmond Past Old Dominion, 3-1

NORFOLK, VA. (March 17) - Righthander Mike Smith scattered two hits and fannedten in pitching Richmond to a complete game, 3-1 victory over Old DominionMarch 17. The Spiders are now 11-8 overall and 1-0 in the CAA. ODU dropsto 10-11-1overall and 0-1 in the CAA. The loss ended ODU's four-game winning streak.

Smith held the Monarchs hitless until Jared Musolf's (Lakehurst, NJ.)one-out double to left center field in the seventh inning. The Monarchs lone runcame in the eighth as Ross Robertson (Chesapeake, Va.) scored from first on aSpiders outfielderror on Joe Troilo's (Avondale, Pa.) fly ball to right.

Richmond scored in the second inning as David Reaver singled home CraigRutter.In the sixth Rich Smith scored on a Vito Chiaravalloti single. The Spidersthird runin the top of the ninth came on Craig Rutters sacrifice fly that scored G.R.Schalickfrom third base. Chiaravalloti and Dan Phipps each had two hits for Richmond.

Monarch starter Parker Friske (Va. Beach, Va.) pitched eight innings,allowing onlyfour hits and striking out a career tying nine batters. The two teams play gametwoof the conference three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m.
