NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion field hockey shutout Longwood, 5-0, on Senior Day at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
“I’m really pleased for our seniors to finish on a good note - two of them scored today!” Head Coach Andrew Griffiths said. “These seniors have worked extremely hard over the past four years, and have led the team to a really good season in 2026. They have also established a strong team culture, and lead by example with work rate, and a positive, team-first attitude. I am proud that they will represent ODU Field Hockey when they go onto their next adventures, and I look forward to seeing what they all accomplish!”
Both teams were quiet in the first quarter, with just a penalty corner awarded to Old Dominion (12-4) to highlight the first 15 minutes. Under two minutes into the second quarter, Lotte Haagmans put the Monarchs on the board with help from Madison Zalewski. One minute later, Serena Langendoen netted one in off a penalty corner, putting ODU up, 2-0. Avery Jackson added another goal onto the board with four minutes remaining in the half, sending the Monarchs into halftime up, 3-0.
Longwood’s (0-15) defense held on strong in the third quarter, preventing ODU from scoring off of five corners and one penalty stroke. However, Old Dominion extended its lead after Haagmans scored her second goal of the day off a corner seven minutes into the fourth quarter. Both teams were down a man for the remainder of the game, with the Monarchs receiving a yellow card and the Lancers receiving a green card. Cosima Perleth scored with three seconds remaining, awarding ODU with a 5-0 victory as Longwood was unable to get on the board.
Old Dominion outshot Longwood 26-1, including 16-0 shots on goal. ODU also collected 10 corners and held Longwood with zero.
Haagmans led the way for ODU in goals scored with two, while Langendoen, Jackson, and Perleth had one each. Four Monarchs also tied in assists with one each, including Stella Houghton, Zalewski, Saccomandi, and Haagmans.
Goalkeeper Suus Broers collected her second shutout of the season.
“Today’s game we played well overall - we could have scored a few more goals, our finishing wasn’t as sharp as it normally is, and Longwood’s goalkeeper had a fantastic game as well,” Griffiths added. “But we had a solid win in our last home game of the season, and that is most important."
