NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion sailing completed three events this weekend. The Monarchs competed in the Riley Cup in Norfolk, Virginia, and had two competitions take place at Navy.
“This past weekend, we used three events as an opportunity to get reps for much of the team and have an early measure of strengths and weaknesses,” said ODU head coach Mitch Brindley. “Both venues, Annapolis and Norfolk, saw variable wind conditions creating a strategic picture that changed frequently. I was pleased with the lessons learned.”
The Silver and Blue hosted the annual Riley Cup and welcomed 13 different schools to the 757. Georgetown won the cup with their A boat who delivered a 37-point performance, the Hoyas B boat came in third with 47 points. ODU’s ‘Monarchs’ boat and ‘Big Blue’ boat finished eighth and ninth with 72 and 80 points, respectively. St. Mary’s (Md.) B boat finished in second place with 40 points and their A boat placed sixth with 58 points. Navy's two boats finished fourth and fifth with 47 and 52 points, respectively.
The highest finish for the Monarchs this past weekend came at the Navy Women’s Regatta in Annapolis, Maryland. ODU earned a third place finish with 146 points and were wedged in-between Navy’s two boats who finished second and fourth, respectively. Georgetown’s A boat finished in first place with 71 points and their B boat placed fifth with 190. St. Mary’s (Md.) placed sixth (212), George Washington finished in seventh (241), and Christopher Newport ended the weekend in eighth (341).
The final competition this weekend was the ILCA Laser South hosted by Navy in Annapolis. Georgetown completed the weekend sweep and finished first with 47 total points. Navy grabbed second (48) and third (76), respectively. Georgetown fielded three boats and the other two placed fourth (86) and fifth (87), respectively. Old Dominion finished just behind St. Mary’s (Md.) whose two boats finished sixth and seventh. ODU top finishing boats were manned by Antonio Barabino and Pierce Brindley. Barabino’s boat earned 96 points while Brindley’s tallied 98. ODU’s Levente Levay and David Karcher both manned their boats to a 14th (139) and 15th (142) placed finish.

Old Dominion competes in the Faye Bennet Regatta followed by the Chesapeake Invitational and will also compete in the Chesapeake Open. All three events will be hosted by Navy in Annapolis on September 19-20. Events last all day.
