WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – #53 Old Dominion men's tennis fell to defending national champions, #4 Wake Forest, by a 4-0 score in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Wake Forest’s Luca Pow and Aryan Shah opened doubles play with a 6-0 win over Old Dominion’s Zech Hamrouni and Felix Obermair on court three, before teammates Dhaksineswar Suresh Ekambaram and Andrew Delgado bested Thomas Nelson and Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan, 6-1, on court one to put the Demon Deacons on the board.
Adam Majchrzak’s and Piet Steveker’s match on court two against Mees Rottgering and Kacper Szumkowiak was unfinished at 2-5.
The Demon Deacons continued their momentum into singles competition, as Rottgering downed Obermair, 6-2, 6-1, on court two. Extending their lead, Pow defeated Steveker, 6-0, 6-3, on court three, before Joaquin Guilleme won on court six over Aryan Saleh, 6-2, 6-0, to clinch Wake Forest’s sweep.
No. 1 Majchrzak, No. 4 Olivier de Sardan’s, and No. 5 Hamoruni’s matches were suspended against respective opponents Suresh Ekambaram (4-6, 3-3), Charlie Robertson (1-6, 6-2), and Shah (6-7, 1-1).
ODU finished the season 21-7 and won its fourth straight Sun Belt Championship. The Monarchs won their first NCAA Tournament match in 19 years with yesterday's 4-0 win over Gardner-Webb.
