DURHAM, N.C. – #58 Old Dominion women’s tennis fell 4-2 to #19 Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon.

“Hats off to Tennessee for coming out on top of a hard-fought match. I’m proud of the way we competed today,” said Head Coach Dominic Manilla. “We put ourselves in position to win the match but just couldn’t get over the hump.”

In doubles on court two, Catherine Aulia and Leyla Britez Risso downed Marina Markina and Uladzislava Manzhos, 6-1. For the doubles point, Francesca Mattioli and Vanesa Suarez downed Kira Matushkina and Victoria Matasova, 6-3, on court one, suspending Katrina Scott and Maeve Thornton’s match against Ulyana Romanova and Lidiia Rasskouskaia on court three at 5-3.

Scott recorded the first singles win on court one over Matushkina, 6-2, 6-1. Romanova recorded the first ODU point after downing Catherine Aulia, 6-4, 6-3, on court three. #87 Vanesa Suarez defeated Uladzislava Manzhos, 7-5, 6-1, on court four, before teammate Mattioli bested Rasskouskaia, 6-3, 6-3, on court five. Markina recorded the last Monarch point after besting Saray Yli-Piipari, 6-2, 6-4, suspending Romanova and Aulia’s match on court three, 6-4, 6-3.

“I’m happy for the spirit we displayed and how evident it was that we wanted to win. Thank you to the fans, our staff, Dr. Selig and the entire athletic department, as well as President Hemphill, for the honor to represent ODU,” added Manilla. “We are already ready for next season.
