NORFOLK, Va. – #62 Old Dominion women’s tennis defeated East Carolina, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
Old Dominion began doubles play strongly, with No. 2 Marina Markina and Uladzislava Manzhos taking the first match over Xenia Jeromin and Lilly Lancaster, 6-1. No. 3 Lidiia Rasskouskaia and Ulyana Romanova and No. 1 Kira Matushkina and Victoria Matasova both followed suit, defeating Skylar Moody and Veronika Pavlenko (6-2) and Kim Auerswald and Reese Calvo (6-2) at the same time, putting the Monarchs on the board.
ECU’s Auerswald tied the match with the first win of singles competition, downing #97 Matushkina 6-0, 6-3 on court one. However, Romanova earned the first ODU singles win with a victory over Savekova (6-2, 6-2) on court two. Joan Madi defeated Mya Byrd shortly after on court six by a 6-1, 6-3 score, though No. 4 Rasskouskia put the Monarchs one point away from taking the match following a 7-5, 6-1 win over Calvo. For the match victory, Manzhos bested Jeromin 6-3, 6-0 to give Old Dominion the 4-2 win.
No. 5 Marina Markina’s match against Pavlenko was suspended at 6-2, 5-2.
Old Dominion remains in Norfolk to host Elon on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m. at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
