ROME, Ga. – #60 Old Dominion women’s tennis downed Arkansas State, 4-1, to advance to the Sun Belt Conference Finals on Saturday afternoon in Rome, Georgia.
Monarchs Ulyana Romanova and Lidiia Rasskouskaia secured a 6-1 victory on court three over Red Wolves Hanmare McAslin and Helena Bueno to begin the day, with Kira Matushkina and Victoria Matasova following suit after besting Lilly Cvanciger and Carla Muro Castellvi, 6-3, on court one. With the doubles point belonging to ODU, Marina Markina’s and Uladzislava Manzhos’ match against Sarah Millard and Anna Grigoreva was suspended at 3-4 on court two.
Romanova bested McAslin, 6-2, 6-1, on court three to open singles play. No. 5 Rasskouskaia put Old Dominion one point away from claiming the match following a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Meghna Arun Kumar, though Arkansas State’s Cvanciger delayed the Monarchs win by defeating Matasova, 6-3, 6-4, on court two. Markina was still able to clinch ODU’s win, downing Millard 7-5, 6-4, on court six to send Old Dominion to the SBC Finals.
No. 1 Matushkina’s and No. 4 Manzhos’ matches were suspended against respective opponents Grigoreva (6-4, 5-4) and Muro Castellvi (3-6, 6-2, 1-0).
Old Dominion plays for its sixth-straight conference championship on Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m. against App State or Marshall.
