NORFOLK, Va. – #59 Old Dominion women’s tennis defeated Georgia Southern, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
Georgia Southern’s Franzi Heinemann and Nanaka Kijima opened the match with a 6-2 win over Lidiia Rasskouskaia and Ulyana Romanova on court three, ODU’s Kira Matushkina and Victoria Romanova tied their doubles competition after besting Angelina Mihajlovic and Evelyn Warkentin, 6-3, on court one. For the doubles point, Old Dominion’s Uladzislava Manzhos and Marina Markina pulled away from Mackenzie Leopold and Lisen Rinman on court two by a 7-5 score to put ODU on the board.
The Eagles forfeited court six due to not having enough players and put the Monarchs up 2-0 entering singles play. Rasskouskaia carried on ODU’s momentum with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over GS’ Amelie Rosadoro on court four, however Warkentin broke up that streak after defeating Matasova 7-5, 6-0 on court one. For the win, Romanova daowned Mihajlovic 6-2, 6-2 on court two to claim the match.
No. 3 Manzhos’ and No. 5 Markina’s matches against respective opponents Heinemann (6-7, 1-4) and Kijima (6-3, 5-3) were suspended.
Old Dominion travels south to North Carolina to take on #32 Charlotte on Sunday, April 12 at 10 a.m.
