NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion sailing placed first in the Diamondback Women’s Fleet Race, fifth at the John Jackson Memorial Team Race, and sixth in the Jen Harris Team Race over the weekend.

“I am happy with the trajectory of our performances across the regattas this weekend,” said ODU head coach Mitch Brindley. “We continue to make improvements in our team racing execution as the season heats up.”

Diamondback Women’s Fleet Race:

Old Dominion placed first out of the five competing schools. Columbia placed second, Maryland finished third, Princeton and Delaware placed fourth and fifth, respectively. The Monarchs’ boats led throughout the race while Columbia and Maryland went back and forth early on for second place, but the Lions found their stride by the midway point and separated from the Terrapins.

ODU’s boat one was manned by two freshmen, skipper Esther Ireland and crew Helena Allocco and boat two was marshaled by senior crew Kristin Johnson and freshman crew Emily Priest.

John Jackson Memorial Team Race:

The Silver and Blue placed fifth out of eight teams. Boston College finished first followed by Georgetown in second and Hobart and William in third. The Roger Williams Hawks placed fourth and Pennsylvania finished sixth. Rounding out the competition Fordham placed seventh and the Connecticut Camels finished in eighth.

In the first round ODU finished with a record of 2-5 with losses to Boston College, Connecticut College, Georgetown, Hobart & William, and Pennsylvania. ODU defeated Fordham (1-2-5) and Roger Williams (1-2-6). In the bottom four round ODU pulled through with a 2-1 record by defeating Pennsylvania and Fordham but lost to Connecticut College.

Jen Harris Team Race:

The Monarchs finished sixth out of 12 teams, Stanford took home first place followed by Brown in second. Cornell came in third, Harvard finished fourth, Tufts in fifth, Pennsylvania placed seventh, Georgetown ended the day in eighth, Navy came in ninth, Rollins placed 10th, while Hobart & William and South Florida finished 11th and 12th, respectively. 

ODU ended with a record of 4-5 including victories over Cornell (2-3-4), Pennsylvania (1-2-3), Rollins (1-4-5), and South Florida (1-2-5). ODU fell to Stanford (4-5-6), Brown (3-5-6), Harvard (3-5-6), Georgetown (3-4-5), and Hobart & William (1-5-6).

Old Dominion’s open team is back in action on Saturday, March 14 for the Graham Hall Team Race hosted by Navy. The women’s team will be in action on Sunday, March 15 for the St. Mary’s (Md.) Women’s Fleet Race.
