NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion sailing wrapped up its first weekend of competition, the women’s sailing team placed second in a DC Team Race Cross Regional Regatta. ODU finished three rounds of sailing with an overall record of 6-3. The Open squad finished a DC Team Race with a 5/10 finish.
“At both regattas, we saw dramatic changes in the wind strength and direction requiring smooth and responsive boat handling and strategic clarity,” said ODU head coach Mitchell Brindley. “We are still making plenty of mistakes, but we are learning in the right direction.”
ODU finished three rounds of sailing the Monarchs finished with an overall record of 6-3 in the Cross Regional Regatta. The Silver and Blue got off to a slow start in round one with a win against Fordham (1-2-5) and losses against Georgetown (3-5-6) and St. Mary’s (Md.) (1-5-6).
The Monarchs grew into the day and went 2-1 in round two with wins over Fordham (1-2-4) and St. Mary’s (Md.) but lost to Georgetown (1-5-6). Old Dominion finished the afternoon strong with a 3-0 round in the final stanza, ODU defeated Fordham (1-2-4), Georgetown (1-2-5), and St. Mary’s (1-2-6).

ODU competes in three separate competitions this weekend. The Monarchs take part in a team race at Navy on March 7 while the women’s sailing team will compete in the Diamondback Women’s Fleet Race. ODU will also participate in the John Jackson Team Race from March 7-8.
