NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion women’s tennis defeated in-state foe VCU 4-1 in the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

“A good job by our team today after a slow start to our doubles,” Head Coach Dominic Manilla said. “I’m proud of the coach-ability our players embraced today and the resilience to dig themselves out of a tough situation. There are things we need to address in the doubles but there is also plenty of praise to go around.”

Rams Sara Alba and Viktoria Lackova began doubles play for VCU with a 6-2 victory over Lidiia Rasskouskaia and Ulyana Romanova on court three, however, Monarchs Victoria Matasova and Kira Matushkina responded with a 6-3 win over Tan Andrade Sabando and Mariam Ibrahim on court one. In a battle for the first point of the day, VCU pulled away as Andrea Magallanes and Sofia Jane Thorne downed Uladzislava Manzhos and Marina Markina, 7-6, on court two.

No. 6 Rasskouskaia tied the match for ODU as she opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Magallanes, allowing for teammate #102 Matushkina to take the lead as she defeated Jane Thorne 6-1, 6-0 on court one. No. 4 Manzhos bested Lackova (6-2, 6-1) to bring the Monarchs one point from claiming the match, before #115 Matasova downed Andrade Sabando (6-2, 7-5), sealing ODU’s win.

No. 3 Romanova’s and No. 5 Markina’s matches against respective opponents Ibrahim (4-6, 6-1) and Elicia Kim (4-6, 3-3) were suspended.

Old Dominion remains home to host App State on Friday, March 27 at 11 a.m. at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
