Farmville, Va. – Old Dominion Lacrosse fell 12–7 to Longwood on Tuesday afternoon. 

Old Dominion (5-5) quickly opened the scoring with a goal from Natalie Calandra-Ryan within the first minute to take a 1-0 lead. Longwood (1-5) responded with a goal from Sarah Forman at the 12:11 mark, tying the game at 1-1.  Longwood took a 2-1 lead two minutes later on a goal from Madison Rogers.

Just over a minute later, the Lancers capitalized on a man-up opportunity with a goal by Jordan Fitzgerald at the 8:54 mark to extend the lead to 3-1. Less than a minute later, Forman scored her second goal of the day to make it 4-1 with 8:02 remaining. Longwood’s Bailey Stratton then beat ODU goalkeeper Brynn Bowen for her first goal of the game, pushing the score to 5-1 at 7:23.

ODU broke its scoring drought when Molly Heimerl found the back of the net off a pass from Annalynn Pompetti, cutting the deficit to 5-2 with 3:51 to go in the quarter. Lydia Laney followed with a Monarch goal of the day to make it 5-3 heading into the end of the first quarter.

To start the second quarter, Stratton scored her second goal of the day at 12:42 to make it 6-3. She completed a hat trick at the 11:54 mark, extending the lead to 7-3. She struck again at 10:36 for her fourth goal, bringing the score to 8-3 Lancers.

In response, Kayleigh Flanegan scored off a pass from Jules Mills to score a goal at the 9:05 mark, making it 8-4. Stratton added her fifth goal at the 1:46 mark to give Longwood a 9-4 lead heading into halftime.

After the break, ODU’s Ella Bowen scored with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 9-5. With 1:11 to go in the quarter, Longwood’s Alexandra Hirst found the back of the net to make it 10-5 heading into the fourth.

In the final quarter, Longwood opened the scoring with a goal from Kendra DeFilippo at 14:10, extending the lead to 11-5. After a foul on Lily Stohlman, Julia Butler capitalized on a free-position shot for ODU to make it 11-6. Rogers added another goal for Longwood, and the Lancers went on to secure the 12-7 victory.

The Monarchs return to Norfolk on Saturday, March 21, to host Vanderbilt. The game will celebrate Morgan’s Message, with the opening draw scheduled for noon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
