NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion women’s basketball heads to Lafayette to battle it out with Louisiana on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Cajundome. The Monarchs compete in the second round of the MAC-SBC Challenge and travel to Athens to play Ohio on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
Both games will be streamed on ESPN+. Wednesday’s game at Louisiana will air on Fox Sports Radio 1310, while Saturday’s game will air on ESPN Radio 94.1. Matthew Hatfield and Shonda Deberry will have the call, and live stats will also be available.
ALL-TIME SERIES & LAST TIME OUT:
Louisiana leads the all-time series, 2-0. The sides last met on Jan. 4, 2024 and the Ragin' Cajuns used a 21-point second quarter to pull within a point as ODU saw its lead shrink to 29-28 at halftime. The final quarter was marred by several foul calls that prevented the Monarchs from getting any momentum. Of Louisiana's 21 points in the fourth, 13 of them came at the free-throw line in the final five minutes and nine seconds of action as ODU fell, 66-61.
This is the first meeting between the Monarchs and the Bobcats.
ABOUT ODU:
The Monarchs have eight games remaining in the regular season and of those eight, ODU will play six games on the road and two at home. Old Dominion’s final home games are on Feb. 11 and Feb. 14 against Coastal Carolina and James Madison, respectively. ODU sits in seventh in the Sun Belt and has a NET Ranking of 142.
The Monarchs are tied for the 12th best shot blocking team in the nation and are number one in the Sun Belt averaging 5.7 blocks per game. Junior transfer forward Riley Stack is fourth in the nation and first in the Sun Belt with 64 blocks. Cunningham’s 23 blocks are good for ninth in the conference.
ODU is tied for 19th in Division I in total rebounding (42.26) and is 27th in offensive rebounding output (15.1 orpg). The Monarchs have the second-best rebounding offense (42.26) in the Sun Belt and are shooting 71.4% from the free throw line this year to rank fourth in the SBC.
Old Dominion holds opposing teams to 37.0% shooting from the field, which is good for 46th in Division I and is second best in the conference. Buford has 55 steals this season, which is good for fourth in the SBC, Simaru Fields ranks tied for ninth in the conference with 48.
ABOUT LOUISIANA:
The Ragin’ Cajuns are on a three-game losing streak and sit in 14th in the Sun Belt. The last time Louisiana was in action was in a 95-54 loss to Marshall in Huntington, W.Va. Garry Brodhead is in his 14th season in Lafayette and is ULL’s all-time winningest head coach with 217 wins. Louisiana is ranked 334 in the NET Ranking.
ULL has four players averaging double-digit scoring numbers. Mikaylah Manley’s 12.1 ppg ranks first on the team followed by Amijah Prince’s 11.2 ppg, Imani Daniel’s 11.1 ppg, and Jazmyne Jackson’s 11.0 ppg. On the glass, Daniel’s 5.9 rpg ranks first on the team.
As a team, Louisiana scores 56.1 ppg and concedes 74.5 for a -18.4-scoring margin. The Ragin’ Cajuns shoot 34% from the floor, 24.1% from behind the arc, and 71.6% from the free throw line. Louisiana grabs 35.6 boards per game and allows opponents to snag 42.9 rebounds per game for a -7.3-rebounding margin.
ABOUT OHIO:
The Bobcats are on a three-game losing streak and take on Western Michigan in MAC action on Wednesday night in Athens before gearing up to host the Monarchs on Saturday. Ohio is ranked 183 in NET Ranking and is 6 in the MAC.
Bailey Tabeling and Bella Ranallo are the Bobcats’ leading scorers with 13.6 ppg and 11.8 ppg, respectively. Asiah Baxter (4.7 rpg), Elli Garnett (4.4 rpg), and Danni Scully (4.3 rpg) control the boards for Ohio. Tabeling and Ranallo have made 46 and 33 three-pointers, respectively.
As a team, the Bobcats score 74.1 ppg and concede 71.4 ppg for a +2.7-scoring margin. Ohio shoots 41.1% from the field, 32.3% from behind the arc, and 65.9% from the free throw line. The Bobcats concede a -6.2-rebounding margin and grab 35.5 rpg.
