LAWRENCE, Kan. – Old Dominion women’s tennis ended its road weekend with a 4-2 win over Kansas on Sunday afternoon.

“Great performance from our squad today,” Head Coach Dominic Manilla said. “We took a gut wrenching loss as a team on Friday and we needed a strong response. I’m proud of our ability to handle tough situations and the hunger that was required from us today to get the win. We are eager to get back on campus and to start preparing for the outdoor season.”

Jayhawks He Janse van Vuuren and Meg McCarty earned the first doubles win for Kansas, downing Lidiia Rasskouskaia and Ulyana Romanova 6-3 on court two. However, No. 2 Victoria Matasova and Kira Matushkina battled back, defeating Yerke Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina 6-3, leaving the doubles point to court three. In a close battle, Kansas took the first point of the day after Meriem Ben Ezzedine and Kinley VanPelt won against Uladzislava Manzhos and Marina Markina, 6-4.

Arystanbekova kept her momentum going and earned the first singles point with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over No. 98 Matasova on court two. No. 6 Lidiia Rasskouskaia put the Monarchs on the board shortly after, besting VanPelt 6-3, 6-2, as No. 3 Romanova tied the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ben Ezzedine. 

ODU kept the energy, with No. 5 Markina putting the Monarchs one point away from clinching the match after winning against Nahyeong Cho (6-2, 6-2), and for the victory, Manzhos downed McCarty 6-4, 6-2, sealing a 4-2 win for Old Dominion.

No. 82 Kira Matushkina’s match on court one against Janse van Vurren was suspended at 3-6, 6-3, 3-2.

The Monarchs return home next month to host VCU on Saturday, March. 21 at 11 a.m. in the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
