NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s basketball has a couple of road games this week as the Monarchs play at Coastal Carolina on Thursday and at James Madison on Saturday. The first game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. opening tip, and the second game will begin at 4 p.m.

Both games will be streamed on ESPN+, and fans can also hear Ted Alexander and Dennis Wolff on ESPN Sports Radio 94.1 FM. Live stats will also be available.

Series History

ODU and CCU have previously met nine times, with the Monarchs ahead in the all-time series, 6-3. Old Dominion hosted Coastal Carolina on Dec. 20 and dropped a close game, 76-74. Down 34-29 at the half, a Caelum Swanton-Rodger dunk gave ODU a 63-62 lead with 4:08 left in the game. However, the Chanticleers took advantage of multiple ODU turnovers down the stretch to hold on. Jordan Battle scored 22 of his 23 points in the second half, and KC Shaw followed with 20 points.

The Monarchs opened conference play with a 77-68 win over the Dukes in a TowneBank Royal Rivalry game on Dec. 17 in Norfolk. ODU used a 10-0 run to close out the first half and never looked back. Shaw eclipsed 1,000 career points in the victory and led ODU with 22 points and nine rebounds. The win snapped JMU’s nine-game winning streak in the series, which ODU leads 59-35.

About ODU

The Monarchs (4-12, 1-3 Sun Belt) have dropped four in a row and are coming off a 93-86 home loss to Georgia Southern last Saturday. ODU dug itself an early hole, trailing 20-2 at the 13:19 mark in the first half. Old Dominion scored six unanswered late to pull to within five at 85-80, but couldn’t catch the Eagles. KC Shaw led the Monarchs with 23 points, Robert Davis Jr. followed with 15 points, Drew McKenna chipped in 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Jordan Battle also reached double figures with 10 points.

ODU’s offense is paced by Shaw (16.3 ppg), Battle (13.4 ppg), and LJ Thomas (11.3 ppg). Davis Jr. (9.1 ppg) has made a team-high 31 three-pointers and ranks fifth in the Sun Belt with 101 three-point attempts. Battle is close behind him with 29 makes from distance and Jared Turner (5.9 ppg) has knocked down 25 deep balls. At the line, Battle is fourth in the league with 72 made free throws and is fifth in free-throw shooting at 85.7%. The Norfolk native has dished out 47 assists and Thomas is at 38 assists.

Battle has also pulled down 86 boards and is the team’s top rebounder at 5.4 rpg. Swanton-Rodger (4.6 ppg) is next with 42 rebounds and 4.6 rpg. The senior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada has also made 20 blocks, good for sixth in the conference. Battle has grabbed 23 assists, followed by Thomas with 15 and Scottie Hubbard (3.8 ppg) with 10.

The Monarchs are scoring 73.9 ppg, but have allowed opponents to score 78.1 ppg. The team enters the week shooting 42.6% from the field, 32.9% from long range, and 73.9% at the charity stripe. ODU enters the week ranked fourth in the Sun Belt in three-point percentage defense (31.3%). Through games played on Jan. 5, Old Dominion is 273rd in the NET rankings.

About Coastal Carolina

The Chanticleers (8-8, 1-3 Sun Belt) have dropped two in a row, falling 82-81 in overtime to Georgia Southern last Thursday and 89-71 to Georgia State this past Saturday. In the first game, CCU rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit and led 81-80 with 1:25 left in extra time, but Georgia Southern’s Spudd Webb made a couple of late free throws to secure the win for the Eagles. In the second game, CCU led 34-25 at halftime, but allowed the Panthers to score 64 points in the second half.

Rasheed Jones leads the Chants with 15.1 ppg, Joshua Beadle is second at 14.5 ppg, and AJ Dancler is third with 14.4 ppg. Beadle ranks 13th nationally with 222 field goal attempts, and Jones and Dancler are the top two threats from the perimeter with 32 threes each. Beadle owns 54 assists, Jones has 42, and Dancler is at 38.

Reggie Hill (6.1 ppg) has secured 94 rebounds (6.3 rpg), followed by Dancler with 88 (5.5 rpg) and Nadjrick Peat (4.1 ppg) with 83 (5.2 rpg). Dancler, Beadle, and Hill have combined for 44 steals and Peat ranks fourth in the Sun Belt with 24 blocks and 1.5 blocks per game.

The Chants own a +0.6-scoring margin with 73.2 ppg against 72.6 points allowed per game. CCU is shooting 40.1% from the floor, 32.4% from beyond the arc, and 71.5% at the line. Coastal Carolina currently ranks fourth in Division I in defensive rebounds per game (30.81), 19th in field goal percentage defense (38.6%), and 21st in in rebounds per game (30.81). The team is also second in the conference in three-point percentage defense (30.9%) and turnovers per game (10.3).

As of Jan. 6, Coastal Carolina was 248th in the NET rankings.

About James Madison

After falling 103-74 to then-No. 18 Arkansas on Dec. 29, the Dukes (8-7, 1-2 Sun Belt) got back in the win column with a 78-74 victory at Arkansas State last Saturday. JMU trailed 23-13 in the first half, but put together an 11-0 run to seize control and hit three late three-pointers for a 39-34 lead at the break. The Dukes put together a 14-0 run in the second half and held on late as Cliff Davis scored 24 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the arc. Justin Mcbride turned in a 21-point effort and Gabe Newhof contributed 15 points.

Mcbride is the Sun Belt’s second-leading scorer with 17.2 ppg and the junior from Plano, Texas ranks third in the league with 52.9% shooting from the field. Also averaging double-digit scoring are Bradley Douglas (14.1 ppg) and Davis (12.8 ppg). Davis is JMU’s go-to option on the perimeter with 41 made triples this season. He’s third in the SBC in both three-point shooting (36.6%) and threes per game (2.73). Douglas is the team’s leader in assists with 62.

Eddie Ricks III (7.3 ppg) needs one more rebound to reach 100 for the season and pulls down 6.6 rpg. Davis and Ricks III have combined for 33 steals, and Christian Brown (3.1 ppg) is second in the Sun Belt with 1.93 blocks per game and third with 29 blocks.

The Dukes net 75.9 ppg, but are allowing 77.7 ppg. The team is shooting a combined 44.6% from the field and 71.3% at the free-throw line. JMU ranks second in the conference in three-point shooting (35.4%) and is fourth in threes per game (9.3) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.17). James Madison is 27th in the country with 5.0 blocks per game.

JMU was listed 217th in the recent NET rankings.

Next week will see the Monarchs in Statesboro, Georgia on Thursday, Jan. 15 for a 7 p.m. meeting with Georgia Southern. ODU then travels to Boone, North Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 17 to play App State at 1 p.m.
