NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion women’s basketball hosts Howard for educator appreciation day on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. at Chartway Arena. Both teams have been included in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 this season.
Fans will be able to watch both games on ESPN+ with Chip Tarkenton providing play-by-play and Kim Aston adding color commentary. Matthew Hatfield and Shonda Deberry can be heard on Fox Sports Radio 1310 AM and live stats will also be available.
ALL-TIME SERIES & LAST TIME OUT:
The Monarchs lead the all-time series against the Bison, 3-0. The two programs faced off last year for the first time since 2015. ODU traveled to the nation’s capital and defeated the Bison 75-58. En’Dya Buford recorded a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double, Simaru Fields followed with 13 points and Kelsey Thompson had 12 points.
ABOUT ODU:
The Silver and Blue are coming off a bounce-back , 68-45 win over Delaware State on Monday. The Monarchs are 6-3 this season and 4-1 at Chartway Arena.
The Monarchs are the fourth best shot blocking team in the nation, averaging 7.6 blocks per game. Coastal Carolina junior transfer Riley Stack is second in the nation with 29 blocks. Laila Walker’s 13 blocks are good for 67th in the NCAA and Simone Cunningham’s 11 blocks are 102nd to round out the Monarchs’ rim protectors.
ODU has the 15th ranked total rebounding (45.56) and offensive rebounding output in the nation (17 orpg). ODU ranks 51st in the nation with 11.4 steals per game. ODU is shooting 74% from the charity stripe this year to rank 79th in the nation. The Monarchs average 14.56 made free throws per game to sit tied for 65th nationally.
Old Dominion has one of the top ranked defenses in the country, the Monarchs hold opposing teams to 32.5% shooting from the field, which is good for 13th in Division I. The Monarchs defend the perimeter well too, holding teams to a shooting percentage of 25.6% to rank 46th in the NCAA. ODU forces an average of 21.11 turnovers per game to sit 54th in the nation. En’Dya Buford has 22 steals this season which is good for 62nd nationally and Simaru Fields is right behind her with 21 of her own to rank tied for 75th in Division I.
ABOUT HOWARD:
The Bison are 7-3 this season and slotted in at 19th in the most recent College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 Poll that was released on Dec. 2. Howard is 2-2 in its last four games played and most recently defeated Fairfield, 72-69 on Friday, Dec. 5.
Zennia Thomas is the Bison’s leading scorer averaging 16 points per game followed by Zoe Stewart’s 11.9 ppg. Thomas also leads Howard in the rebounding battle, she grabs 7.5 rebounds per game. Destin Bynum-Johnson and April Edwards have both made 10 three pointers for a team lead. Stewart has made nine long balls this season for third on Howard.
The Bison have a scoring margin of +3.8 and make an average of 22.8 field goals per game for 65.8 points per game. Howard has a -.2.7-rebounding margin and grabs an average of 37.1 per contest. They dish 10.8 assists, force 18.8 turnovers, swipe 10.1 steals, and block 4.3 shots per game.
