NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s basketball will make the drive to the state capitol this weekend as the Monarchs square off against the Richmond Spiders on Saturday. Tipoff at the Robins Center is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

Saturday’s game will be streamed on the USA Network, with Ted Alexander and Dennis Wolff calling the action on ESPN Sports Radio 94.1. Live stats will also be available.

Series History

Saturday’s game will mark the 62nd meeting between the two programs. While ODU is ahead in the all-time series, 33-28, Richmond has taken the last two meetings.

The Monarchs and Spiders last played each other on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021 in Richmond, a game that went to the hosts, 67-61. Austin Trice scored 14 of his season-high 20 points in the second half, but UofR made five throws in the final 16 seconds to hold off the ODU comeback.

About ODU

The Monarchs (3-6) are coming off an 88-75 loss at William & Mary last Sunday. Old Dominion cut a 14-point deficit down to one point early in the second half, but the Tribe pulled away again. Jordan Battle scored 22 of a season high 24 points in the second half and also led the Monarchs on the glass with seven rebounds.

Battle is averaging 13.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. The Norfolk native ranks third in the Sun Belt with 40 made free throws and is also fifth in the league with 87.0% shooting at the free-throw line. LJ Thomas nets 12.7 ppg and owns a team-best 35 assists, and Robert Davis Jr. is scoring 9.0 ppg. The Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year has knocked down 16 three-pointers, while Battle and Jared Turner (5.9 ppg) have made 15 threes each.

On defense, Caelum Swanton-Rodger (7.0 ppg) has pulled down 40 boards (4.4 rpg) and leads ODU with nine blocks. Battle and Thomas have each grabbed 13 steals.

Old Dominion averages 75.1 ppg, but has allowed opponents to net an average of 77.8 ppg. The Monarchs enter Saturday’s game shooting a combined 44.4% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc, and 72.9% at the line. The team also averages 35.1 rpg. ODU is currently fourth in the SBC with 14.2 assists per game and is fifth in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.16) and fastbreak points (12.0).

About Richmond

The Spiders (7-1) have won two in a row and won 84-76 at Belmont on Wednesday night in Nashville. A close game with 14 lead changes, UofR put together a late 11-2 run and cemented the victory on a Will Johnston deep ball with 27 second left. Johnston finished with a team-high 19 points and David Thomas was right behind him with 18 points.

Richmond has three players scoring in double figures: Aj Lopez is the leading scorer with 11.5 ppg, Aiden Argabright is second with 10.9 ppg, and Jaden Daughtry is third at an even 10.0 ppg. Johnston is the leading threat from the perimeter with 15 made threes, though Thomas has hit 13 triples, Mikkel Tyne (7.9 ppg) has knocked down 11, and Lopez is up to 10 makes from the arc. Argabright is shooting 84.8% at the charity stripe and ranks fourth in the A10 with 39 made free throws, and Walz has the team’s most assists with 24.

Mike Walz (6.1 ppg) ranks fourth in his conference in total rebounds (60), rebounds per game (7.5), and defensive rebounds per game (5.13). Teammate Jonathan Beagle (7.1 ppg) is third in the A10 with 2.75 offensive rebounds per game. Argabright has a team-high 15 steals while Lopez and Daughtry have made three blocks apiece.

The Spiders have a +15.9-scoring margin, averaging 84.6 ppg while holding opponents to 68.8 ppg. As a team, Richmond is shooting 46.7% from the floor, including 35.6% from distance, and 74.4% at the line. UofR ranks sixth in the country with 41.88 bench points per contest. Richmond also leads the A10 with 11.4 turnovers per game and is second in its conference in three-pointers per game (9.6), three-point attempts per game (27.0), three-point percentage defense (29.4%), and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.42).

Head coach Chris Mooney is in his 21st season leading the program. The Spiders went 10-22 last season and 5-13 in conference play. They were picked to finish 10th in the A10 Preseason Poll with Walz earning Preseason All-Conference Third Team honors.
