Series History

Sunday will mark the seventh meeting in the all-time series, which the Terrapins lead, 5-1. It will also be the first time the teams will face each other since Nov. 25, 2020 when ODU opened the season with an 85-67 loss at Maryland. ODU’s lone win in the series came on Jan. 24, 1987 when the Monarchs defeated the Terps, 87-73 in Norfolk.

About ODU

The Monarchs (4-9, 1-1 Sun Belt) dropped a close game to Coastal Carolina, 76-74 on Saturday, Dec. 20 at Chartway Arena. A Caelum Swanton-Rodger dunk gave ODU a 63-62 lead with 4:08 left to play, but the Chanticleers capitalized off multiple ODU turnovers and made their shots at the line to pull away late. Jordan Battle finished with 23 points, KC Shaw was right behind him with 20 points, and Swanton-Rodger turned in a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Shaw is the Monarchs’ leading scorer with 16.0 ppg, Battle is second with 14.2 ppg, and LJ Thomas is also averaging double figures with 12.3 ppg. Battle has made a team-high 25 three-pointers and ranks second in the Sun Belt in free-throw shooting (87.5%) and third in free throws made (63). The Norfolk native also leads ODU with 71 rebounds, 5.5 rpg, 37 assists, and 19 steals.

Robert Davis Jr. is scoring 9.0 ppg and has knocked down 24 threes, while Jared Turner (6.0 ppg) has hit 22 shots from distance. Swanton-Rodger (7.4 ppg) follows Battle on the glass with 68 boards (5.2 rpg) and has made 17 blocks, and Thomas is second on the team in both assists (35) and steals (13).

As a team, the Monarchs are scoring 74.2 ppg, but have allowed 77.2 ppg. ODU is shooting 43.4% from the field, 33.1% from beyond the arc, and 75.3% at the free-throw line. Old Dominion ranks third in the Sun Belt in three-point percentage defense (30.3%) and fourth in free-throw shooting.

Head coach Mike Jones was an assistant coach at Maryland for the 2023-24 season and video coordinator Aidan Brami was a graduate assistant for the Terrapins the same season. Additionally, Swanton-Rodger spent his first two seasons in College Park from 2022-2024. ODU is listed 234th in the latest NET rankings.

About Maryland

The Terrapins (6-6, 0-2 Big Ten) are looking to snap a three-game skid after falling 80-72 at No. 23 Virginia last Saturday, Dec. 20.
