NORFOLK, Va. - ODU women’s basketball welcomes the Troy Trojans to Chartway Arena for the opening matchup of Sun Belt Conference action on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. It is ODU’s Education Day and students from across the 757 will be in attendance. 

Fans will be able to watch both games on ESPN+ with Chip Tarkenton providing play-by-play and Kim Aston adding color commentary. Matthew Hatfield and Shonda Deberry can be heard on Fox Sports Radio 1310 AM and live stats will also be available.

ALL-TIME SERIES & LAST TIME OUT:

The Monarchs and Trojans last met on Feb. 2, 2025 in Troy, Ala. Old Dominion women’s basketball came back from a 10-point deficit, but fell just short as the Monarchs dropped a 83-80 decision. Brenda Fontana and Simaru Fields made back-to-back threes early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 65-65. Later, another long ball by Fields put ODU ahead 75-73. With 22 seconds remaining, Troy’s Briana Peguero then completed an and-one opportunity that put the Trojans up by five, 82-77. Fields tried to drive in the paint and draw contact, but her shot was blocked and the hosts grabbed the rebound to finish out the game.

The Monarchs lead the all-time series, 2-1.

ABOUT ODU:

Old Dominion is coming off back-to-back wins against Delaware State (68-45) on Monday, Dec. 1 and Howard (63-59) on Sunday, Dec. 7.

The Monarchs are the fourth best shot blocking team in the nation, averaging 7.2 blocks per game. Coastal Carolina junior transfer Riley Stack is third in the nation with 32 blocks. Laila Walker’s 13 blocks are good for 114th in the NCAA  and Simone Cunningham’s 11 blocks are tied for 141st in the nation to round out the Monarchs’ rim protectors.

ODU is ranked 20th nationally in total rebounding (44.4) and is tied for 17th in offensive rebounding output (16.5 orpg). ODU ranks 50th in the nation with 11.2 steals per game. ODU is shooting 73.7% from the charity stripe this year to rank 84th in the nation. The Silver and Blue average 14.6 made free throws per game to sit 56th nationally.

Old Dominion holds opposing teams to 32.5% shooting from the field, which is good for 14th in Division I. The Monarchs defend the perimeter well, holding teams to a shooting percentage of 26.7% to rank 65th in the NCAA. ODU forces an average of 20.80 turnovers per game to sit tied for 56th in the nation. En’Dya Buford has 25 steals this season which is good for 78th nationally and Simaru Fields is right behind her with 23 of her own to rank tied for 117th in Division I.

ABOUT TROY:

Troy comes to Norfolk in high confidence after dispatching Oakwood, 132-62 on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at Trojan Arena to bring their current win streak to six games. Troy is marshalled by Chanda Rigby in her 14th season with the team.

The Trojans rank first in the nation in assists (36), bench points (55), and made three pointers per game (20). Troy is second in rebounding margin (+34) and total rebounding (57 per game). They are third in the NCAA in field goal percentage (57.6%), offensive rebounding (22 orpg), and three point percentage (57.1%).

Fortuna Ngnawo leads the Trojans in scoring with 15.4 points per game followed by Emani Jenkins with 14.1 ppg. Zay Dyer (11.9 ppg) and Ashley Baez (11 ppg) round out the top four Troy scorers.
