NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion men’s soccer takes on West Virginia in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Quarterfinal. The Monarchs match up with the Mountaineers on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

The game will be streamed to ESPN+ and live stats will be available for any fans who wish to follow along with the action.

LAST TIME OUT:

The Monarchs played the Mountaineers in Morgantown, W.Va. on Oct. 22 this season and lost 1-0. Jamie Wynne almost got the Silver and Blue on the board first, but his attempt was stopped by WVU’s Marc Bonnaire in the 33rd minute. ODU conceded a goal to Felix Ewald in the 44th minute with assists being given to Nicolas Scargle and Isaac Scheer. The Monarchs got a free kick near the edge of the box in the 68th minute and Evan Watt struck the ball well, but Bonnaire met the ball to make the save. ODU senior goalkeeper Michael Statham made eight saves to keep the Monarchs in striking distance throughout the 90 minutes.

ABOUT ODU:

The Monarchs enter the tournament as the 7th seed and will be on the road against the 2nd seeded Mountaineers. ODU is coming off the back of a gritty,1-1 draw against #18 Kentucky. The late equalizer was scored by Lewis Rourke in the 75th minute. Against the top three seeds this season in the Sun Belt Conference standings, ODU has a goal differential of -1 and an 0-1-2 record. ODU drew against Marshall (0-0) and Kentucky (1-1) but fell to the Mountaineers (1-0).

Rourke was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team on Friday, Nov. 7 and has been a constant threat for the Monarchs in the opposition's half all season. Rourke scored in four of the final six matches for ODU in the regular season and finished with eight goals, 19 shots on goal, and a team high 19 total points. In all games played, he ranks tied for 4th in goals, 9th in shots , and 6th in points in the SBC. Graduate student Alex Kryazhev and senior Michael Eberle finished tied for 4th and tied for 6th in total assists with six and five, respectively.

Senior goalkeeper Statham had four saves in the Monarchs last regular season game against the Wildcats. He finished the regular season with 60 saves that ranks second in the conference, 4th in shutouts with four, 6th in goals against average with 1.38, and 4th in saves percentage with 73.2%.

ABOUT WVU:

West Virginia finished the season ranked #15 in the country. The Mountaineers finished their regular season with a second half comeback in a 2-1 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia, S.C. 

This season they were led by Sun Belt Player of the Year Marcus Caldeira and All-Sun Belt First Team selection Pablo Pazos. They both combined for 19 goals scored in all games played, finishing 1st and 2nd in total goals in the conference. Caldeira scored nine and finished 3rd in the SBC in total assists with seven in 17 matches. He finished 1st in total points with 25, and 1st in game winning goals with five on the season.

Graduate student goalkeeper Marc Bonnaire had three saves against South Carolina and finished with 35 on the season. That earned him 6th in the Sun Belt Conference standings. He finished the season ranked 2nd in the Sun Belt in goals against average with .882, 2nd in shutouts with eight, and 10th in saves per game with an average of 2.06.

The winner of Sunday's match will play either Marshall or Georgia State in the Sun Belt Conference Semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 12 in Morgantown, W.Va. at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
