NORFOLK, Va. - Gianna Dewey, Arabella Duer and Esther Ireland have been selected for the 2025 College Sailing Singlehanded National Championships. Held at Old Dominion University on November 8-9, Dewey, Duer and Ireland will compete against 15 other women from around the country for the Singlehanded National Championship title and the Janet Lutz Trophy. This is the second time Dewey has been selected in three years and first-time selections for Duer and Ireland.
After finishing second, third and fifth respectively at the Faye Bennett Women's Conference Championships, all three sailors were awarded At-Large berths by the ICSA Selection Committee. The ICSA Selection Committee is charged with selecting the most competitive field of At-Large candidates for the National Championships. To be eligible, competitors must have competed at their respective conference championship. The winners from each of the six conference championships are granted an automatic qualification, leaving the Selectors to fill out the remaining 12 spots for the final field of 18 competitors.
The Monarchs will play host to the championship on Saturday, November 8 and Sunday, November 9 at the Old Dominion University Sailing Center. Eighteen women and 18 open competitors will vie for each national title in equally matched ILCA sail boats provided by Zim Sailing. Each event is a 14-race series, each race approximately 25 minutes long, and the sailor with the low point total in each fleet at the conclusion of racing on Sunday is declared the National Champion.
ODU last hosted the College Sailing Singlehanded National Championships in 2022 and has been awarded At-Large berths in three of the last four years. Scores will be posted live at scores.collegesailing.org and live coverage will be available via video and boat tracking software.
