NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s basketball opens its 2025-26 season this Monday night at Miami (Ohio) in the first round of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Millett Hall.

Ted Alexander and Dennis Wolff can be heard on ESPN Radio 94.1 and live stats will also be available.

Monday’s game will mark the third-ever meeting between the two programs. ODU fell 60-58 to Miami in the second round of the 1993 National Invitation Tournament. The teams met again on Nov. 24, 2000 in the San Juan Shootout, a game that went to the RedHawks, 64-57.

About ODU

The Monarchs hosted Hampton University in an exhibition last Sunday, Oct. 26 at Chartway Arena. ODU trailed by 13, 64-51 with 8:31 remaining in the second half and pulled to within two, 81-79 as LJ Thomas knocked down a three-pointer with nine seconds left. Old Dominion couldn’t catch their opponent though as the Pirates held on, 82-79.

Thomas, a senior guard who transferred to ODU from Austin Peay, led the Monarchs with 22 points. KC Shaw was next with 17 points, and Caelum Swanton-Rodger, Zacch Wiggins, and Scottie Hubbard finished with 10 points each. Swanton-Rodger and Jared Turner both pulled down five boards.

ODU was without Robert Davis Jr., the Sun Belt’s Preseason Player of the Year, and Drew McKenna, a sophomore transfer from Georgetown.

Old Dominion was picked to finish fifth in the SBC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Davis Jr. landed a spot on the Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team, and Jordan Battle, a senior transfer from Coastal Carolina, was named to the Third Team. The Monarchs are led by second-year head coach Mike Jones. This year’s team features nine returners and seven newcomers.

Last year saw the Monarchs drop both games in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. The team opened its 2024-25 campaign with a close 83-82 loss to Buffalo on Nov. 4 in Norfolk. ODU then traveled to Ypsilanti, Michigan on Feb. 8 and fell 76-70 to Eastern Michigan.

About Miami (Ohio)

The RedHawks are coming off a 2024-25 season that saw them finish 25-9 overall and 14-4 in the MAC. It marked the program’s most wins in conference play since 2005-06 and the 25 wins marked a new school record. Miami fell 76-74 to top-seeded Akron in the MAC Championship final and the RedHawks were ranked 23rd in the final Mid-Major Top 25 Coaches Poll.

Miami was picked to finish second in the MAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll behind Akron. Peter Suder was named to the Preseason All-MAC First Team while teammate Eian Elmer landed on the Second Team. A First Team All-MAC selection last season, Suder started all 34 games and led the team with 13.7 points and 3.8 assists per game. Elmer made 32 starts in 33 games for the RedHawks and was third on the team with 11.0 ppg. He was also tied for second with 4.9 rebounds per game, led the team with 50 steals, and was second with 24 blocks.

Miami is led by fourth-year head coach Travis Steele. The RedHawks bring back 10 players from last season with seven newcomers and are ranked 10th in the CollegeInsider.com Preseason Mid-Major Top 25 Poll.
