BLACKSBURG, Va. – Old Dominion women’s tennis completed the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, where 64 players from over 20 different universities competed for a chance to clinch an NCAA berth from Thursday, Oct. 16 to Tuesday, Oct. 21.
Four out of five Monarchs competing were victorious in the Round of 64. No. 17 Kira Matushkina defeated Navy’s No. 18 Olivia Fermo 6-0, 6-3, while No. 32 Marina Markina downed Longwood’s No. 31 Ga Hyun Song Kwon in extra sets (7-6, 4-6, 6-2). No. 44 Victoria Matasova and No. 52 Ulyana Romanova won against respective opponents No. 43 Aida Eissa from Maryland (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) and No. 51 Mariam Ibrahim Mohamed Metwally from VCU (6-4, 6-2).
No. 5 Lidiia Rasskouskaia fell to West Virginia’s No. 6 Laura Villanueva Morillo, 6-2, 6-4.
Matushkina and Matasova continued their winning streak in the Round of 32, as Matushkina downed No. 19 Sophie Williams from James Madison in extra sets (6-7, 6-4, 6-4) and Matasova defeated No. 41 Lara Bakhaya from Richmond in extra sets as well (3-6, 6-3, 6-3). Markina and Romanova fell to respective Maryland opponents No. 30 Magdalena Baniak (6-2, 3-6, 6-1) and No. 49 Lucia Donnelly (6-4, 6-0).
Through hard-fought matches, Matushkina and Matasova were unable to best their Virginia opponents in the Round of 16. Matushkina fell to No. 24 Katie Rolls (7-6, 6-1) while Matasova fell to No. 48 Vivian Yang (6-2, 6-0).
Old Dominion remains on the road as the team travels to Norman, Okla. for the ITF 35K Pro Circuit on Monday, Oct. 20.
