LEWISBURG, Pa. - Old Dominion men’s soccer finished its trip to Pennsylvania with a 4-2 defeat at Bucknell on Sunday afternoon. Lewis Rourke opened the scoring in the first minute, but the Monarchs went on to concede four-straight goals in the loss.
“We started the game really well. But after scoring the first goal we were outworked, out battled, and outran,” said ODU Head Coach Tennant McVea.
Rourke opened the scoring with his first career ODU (1-2-2) goal in the 64th second of the game. The goal came after a cross-field pass by Marcelo Randolph found a darting Jake Lane on the wing who lifted the ball to the far post for the double assist. ODU conceded its first goal of the game in the 22nd minute after a cross was deflected by Jago Lott and found its way into the net. In the dying embers of the first half Bucknell (3-1-1) was able to find a goal that gave the Bisons a lead heading into halftime from Jakub Samelko in the 44th minute. The Monarchs went into the break being down 2-1 on the road.
The Monarchs managed three shots in the first half to the Bison’s eight. ODU registered two shots on goal and Bucknell had three. Old Dominion had three corner kick attempts but couldn’t create a goal from it.
Old Dominion’s Abdou Magib-So conceded a penalty kick in the 52nd minute. Bucknell’s Jack Lucas stepped up and was denied by Michael Statham, but the ball ricocheted back to Lucas who gave the Bison their third goal of the game. Bucknell’s Winston Oziri gave the Bisons a fourth goal of the game in the 81st minute thanks to an assist by Nate Coughlin. ODU’s Rourke netted his second goal of the game for a brace with 52 seconds remaining until the final whistle, cutting the Monarchs deficit to two goals but Old Dominion could not create another scoring opportunity.
“We need to find ways to get results on the road,” added McVea. “This week we have to work hard and get back to the drawing board before another road game at UMBC.”
Both sides were tied with five shots and three shots on goal in the second half. ODU had four corners in the last 45 minutes but did not find a goal from them.
Bucknell outshot ODU 13- 8 but only had one more shot on goal (6) than the Monarchs. Old Dominion ended the contest with seven corners to the Bison’s two. Seven ODU players received a yellow card to the home team’s two.
Senior goalkeeper Statham made three saves in 90 minutes on the pitch, Bucknell’s Freddie Lapworth also made three saves in 90 minutes.
