The Monarchs are playing in the UMBC Tournament. ODU fell 3-1 to the Tribe on Friday morning and 3-0 to the Terrapins on Friday afternoon.

BALTIMORE – Old Dominion volleyball fell 3-1 to William & Mary and 3-0 to Maryland on Friday in what was the first day of the UMBC Tournament.

ODU falls to 0-5 with the two losses.

William & Mary 3, ODU 1

Rita Benidio scored a couple of kills and Kate Kilpatrick served an ace as an early 4-0 run gave the Monarchs a 5-4 lead in the first set. However, the Tribe (2-1) countered with a 5-0 run of its own and never looked back as W&M won the set, 25-15.

ODU controlled much of the second set thanks to a 6-0 spurt that put the Monarchs in front, 10-6. Another kill by Benidio capped off an 8-0 push as Old Dominion extended its lead to 20-10, and the Monarchs pulled even in the match with a 25-14 total.

A block by Emma Schelah and Wiktoria Zagumny gave ODU a 11-10 advantage in the third set, but the Tribe won six-straight points to pull away, 20-13. Benidio made it interesting with another three kills to cut the W&M lead to 23-18, but the Tribe held on 25-20.

Kilpatrick’s third ace of the match helped the Monarchs build a 16-10 lead in the fourth, but back-to-back service aces and a couple of ODU attack errors helped W&M pull even at 17-17. The Tribe then rattled off a 7-0 run and finished the match with a 25-19 final.

Benidio paced the attack with 15 kills while swinging for a .211 hitting percentage. She added 14 digs for her first career double-double. Maggi followed with an 11-kill, 13-dig double-double, Zagumny contributed 28 assists and nine digs, and Kilpatrick tallied 14 digs with five assists and three aces. At the net, Schelah and Lowery recorded three blocks each.

Maryland 3, ODU 0

The Monarchs went up 5-1 on a block by Lowery and Maggi, but the Terrapins (1-2) caught up at 7-7. A service ace by Adrienne Peji tied the set again at 18-18. Benidio also served an ace that knotted the score at 22-22, but Maryland went on to win the set by a 25-23 margin.

The second set was deadlocked at 9-9 when the Terps put together a 4-0 run. They then stretched that lead to 20-14 and grabbed a two-set lead in the match with a 25-16 decision.

ODU fell behind 15-11 midway through the third set, but a Tiana Stubbs kill and a Maryland attack error helped the Monarchs get back to 16-16. Maggi followed a Maryland service error with an ace as ODU pulled ahead 19-17. The sides traded points down the stretch, but Maryland came away with a 25-23 final to end the match.

Maggi led the way with a team-high eight kills, adding 11 digs, four assists, three blocks and two aces to her match totals. Lowery chipped in five kills and five blocks, Zagumny ended up with 16 assists, four digs and three blocks, and Kilpatrick had a team-best 14 digs.
