WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Old Dominion men’s soccer had a season high 21 shots and 14 on goal in a 3-1 victory over William & Mary on Tuesday night in Williamsburg.
ODU’s (3-3-2, 0-1 SBC) Michael Eberle opened the scoring in the 12th minute. He found the back of the net after a corner kick was sent in by Jago Lott and sent outside the box by Tribe defenders, the ball fell to Alex Kryazhev who toe poked it towards goal and forced W&M’s (0-5-3, 0-2-1 CAA) Ryan Eapen into making a save. The ball fell to Lewis Rourke right in front of goal and he also had his point-blank attempt thwarted by Eapen, but Eberle made sure the third time was the charm on the rebound to give ODU a 1-0 lead.
William & Mary brought the game level seven minutes later in the 19th minute after Gabe Ruitenberg found the back of the net thanks to a double-assist by Michael DiOrio and Damen Burney. The Monarchs had five shots on goal in the first half but couldn’t find a second goal.
Evan Watt re-established the Monarch advantage five minutes after the break thanks to a corner kick sent in by Barrett Saul that was met by Watt in the air. The senior defender headed it into the back of a Tribe defender, the rebound came right back to the native of York, Pa. and he slotted it past Eapen to make it 2-1.
ODU found a third goal in the 81st minute to provide a little cushion for the Monarchs. A chipped pass from Jamie Wynne found Rourke, he headed it to Kryazhev who extended his leg and tapped it into the path of Jake Lane who had his initial shot saved. Fortunately for the Monarchs the ball fell back to him with W&M’s goalkeeper Karan Sobti out of the picture and the junior from Chicago, Ill. eased it past the goal line to secure a 3-1 victory.
It was the 60th time the two sides have met. ODU improves its all-time record against W&M to 27-24-9.
ODU had 21 shots, 14 on goal, and 12 corners against the Tribe. W&M had seven shots, three on target, and three corner kicks. ODU’s Teagan Dunne, Watt, Jett Aktan, and Mathias Krohnstad all played the whole 90 minutes. Krohnstad made his first start for the Monarchs since coming to ODU from Switzerland.
ODU senior goalkeeper Michael Statham went the full 90 minutes in goal and made two saves including a point blank save in the 89th minute to keep the Monarchs lead at two goals. The Tribe’s Eapen started the game and ended up making six saves before coming off with a knock in the 54th minute, Sobti finished the game and had three saves against ODU.
