NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion men’s soccer heads out for the last leg of a three-game road trip and is gearing up for a non-conference matchup against UMBC. The Monarchs play the Retrievers on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
The game will be streamed to ESPN+ and live stats will be available for all fans who wish to follow along with the action.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Monarchs and the Retrievers played out a draw in Norfolk on Friday, Sept. 6 last season. Old Dominion found the opening goal from Andrew Bennett in the 41st minute and went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead. UMBC was able to find an equalizer from Ryan Calheira in the 68th minute that was assisted by Ismailcan Usta. The final five minutes got chippy between the two sides, with 5-of-8 yellow cards shown in the match being given. Neither side could find the game-winning goal and the two teams shared the points.
ABOUT OLD DOMINION:
ODU is coming off a 4-2 loss to Bucknell and the game against UMBC is the last non-conference game before the start of Sun Belt Conference play on Friday, Sept. 19 against Georgia Southern. The Monarchs have one more non-conference game slated to be played against Regent on October 14 in Norfolk.
Old Dominion opened the 2025 season with a 2-0 win against George Washington in Norfolk on Thursday, Aug. 21. The Monarchs played out a 0-0 draw to Elon in the second game of the season and fell 2-1 to VCU in Norfolk. Old Dominion was picked to finish seventh in the 2025 Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Monarchs have been integrating 16 new players this season from a recruiting class that ranked 25th by Top Drawer Soccer. Jake Lane, a junior transfer from Bowling Green is the Monarchs leading scorer with three goals and two assists in five games played. His eight total points and three goals both rank third in the Sun Belt. Both Alex Kryazhev and Michael Eberle have three assists in five games and along with leading the Monarchs, they rank tied for third in the Sun Belt.
In goal for the Monarchs is Michael Statham with five starts in five games. He has two clean sheets this season which ranks second in the Sun Belt. His 17 saves are first in the conference and the 3.4 saves per game rank second in the SBC.
ABOUT UMBC:
The Retrievers are coming off a 1-1 draw to William & Mary having won their previous four games. UMBC has scored eight goals across the five games and conceded three. At home, UMBC has been undefeated with three wins in three games played.
Brady Geho leads the Retrievers with seven points on three goals and one assist. Matteo Samori is the team’s second leading scorer with two goals and one assist for five points. Gunder Miller, Andres Javitt, and Brandon Johns have notched one goal each.
In goal for UMBC is Emigdio Tormo Lopez who has started all five of the Retriever’s games. He has conceded three goals, secured two clean sheets, and made 18 saves across all his appearances.
