NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion men’s soccer hosts in-state rival VCU for a matchup on Friday, August 29 at 7 p.m. It is Youth Night at the ODU Soccer Stadium, kids aged 12 and under will enter for free and the game is sponsored by ODUGlobal.

LAST MEETING:

The Monarchs dropped a 3-1 result in Richmond, Virginia on Monday, August 26 2024. Michael Eberle got the ball rolling in the 58th minute of action before a three-goal barrage from the Rams knocked ODU out of contention. Papa Toure scored in the 81st, Andrey Salmeron gave VCU the lead in the 84th, and Toure scored his second goal of the game in the 89th.

ABOUT ODU:

ODU men’s soccer returns to Norfolk after playing out a 0-0 draw against Elon in North Carolina. The Monarchs outshot the Phoenix nine to eight but could not break the deadlock. Old Dominion opened the season with a 2-0 win over George Washington on Aug. 21. Jake Lane played hero and scored two second-half goals to give ODU its first win of the season.

ODU recruited 16 new players and the 2025 recruiting class was ranked 25th by Top Drawer Soccer. Lane leads the team in total points (4) and goals scored (2). Eberle, Kryazhev, and Wayland are all knotted at one assist each. Michael Statham played 90 minutes in goal in the Monarchs’ home opener and made four saves in the shutout.

ABOUT VCU:

The Rams are off to an 0-2 start after dropping a 3-0 loss in Richmond to No. 21 Akron on Aug. 21 and a 3-2 loss at No. 24 UNC Greensboro on Aug. 24.. In their most recent defeat, UNCG’s Enzo Dovlo scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. VCU’s Andrey Salmeron got one back in the 55th before Dovlo completed his hattrick in the 70th minute.

Last season the Rams finished 4-6-7 and went 1-4-3 in the Atlantic 10. Salmeron and Toure were tied for first in goals and points, with both having seven on three goals. The team’s leader in assists was split between Ibrahim Mohammed and Andres Rodriguez with two each. This season, the team has been paced by Salmeron and Kai Feng with one goal each, Moussa Ndiaye has the team’s only assist through two games played.
