NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion men’s soccer is looking to continue its winning ways. The Monarchs head to Elon, N.C. for a meeting with the Elon Phoenix on Monday, August 25 at 7 p.m. at Rudd Field.

The game will be streamed to ESPN+ and live stats will be available for all fans who wish to follow along with the action.

LAST TIME OUT:

The Monarchs last saw the Phoenix back in 2011 when ODU came away with a 3-2 overtime win to maintain a perfect 4-0 record to start their season. Gideon Asante opened the scoring in the 40th minute before Yannick Smith gave the Monarchs more cushion with a two-goal lead. Elon came roaring back with goals in the 63rd and 88th minute to force overtime but Smith found the back of the net thanks to an assist from Chris Harmon in the 94th minute.

ODU has met Elon seven times and has a 5-1-1 overall record against the Phoenix.

ABOUT ODU:

Old Dominion men’s soccer is coming off a 2-0 win over George Washington. Jake Lane played hero and scored two second-half goals. Lane scored on his left foot off an assist by Alex Kryazhev in the 78th minute to break the deadlock. Lane was on the receiving end of great hold up play after Michael Eberle headed down the ball to Micah Wayland who controlled it and found the darting Lane bursting into the box. A right footed smack from the transfer from Bowling Green gave ODU a 2-0 lead and the Monarchs never looked back.

ODU recruited 16 new players and the 2025 recruiting class was ranked 25th by Top Drawer Soccer. Lane leads the team in total points (4) and goals scored (2). Eberle, Kryazhev, and Wayland are all knotted at one assist each. Michael Statham played 90 minutes in goal in the Monarchs’ home opener and made four saves in the shutout.

ABOUT ELON:

The Phoenix was meant to begin their season on August 21 against UAB but the match was cancelled due to inclement weather. Elon is now beginning their season when they host the Monarchs on Monday.

Last season, Scott Vatne was the team’s leading scorer (10), assists (7), and tallied the most points (27) for the Phoenix. Colin Veltri ranked second in goals (6) and Victor Stromsten ranked second in assists (6). Between the sticks Tomasz Wroblewski started all 18 games for Elon and made 61 saves.

UP NEXT:

The Monarchs gear up for an in-state derby with VCU on August 29, 7 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Stadium. It will be Youth Night in Norfolk and the game is presented by ODUGlobal.
