DURHAM, N.C. – Old Dominion women’s tennis fell to Florida Atlantic 4-1 on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Sofia Johnson and Victoria Matasova began the day for ODU with a 6-3 doubles win over No. 1 Lara Smejkal and Malwina Rowinska, though FAU’s No. 2 Victoria Gomez Ohayo and Millie Mae Matthews responded shortly after with a win over Lidiia Rasskouskaia (6-4). For the first point of the day, No. 3 Panna Bartha and Alexandra Silna downed Marina Markina and Kira Matushkina (7-6 (7-3)) in a tie breaker to put the Owls on the board.

No. 2 Bartha continued on and into the singles matches with a win over Matushkina (6-1, 6-3), as teammate No. 4 Rowinska followed suit with a victory over Romanova (6-2, 6-2). To keep ODU alive, No. 5 Matasova downed Silna (6-1, 6-2) for the Monarch’s first point of the day, though No. 6 Mae Matthews would clinch the match for FAU after downing Markina (6-3, 7-5).

No. 1 Johnson’s and No. 3 Rasskouskaia’s matches were suspended respectively, against Gomez Ohayo (2-6, 6-3, 1-0) and Smejkal (3-6, 6-6).

“Every team but one finishes the season with a loss,” Head Coach Dominic Manilla said. “We were happy to make the tournament but wanted to take it further. However, we were champions in defeat today and repped ODU at an admirable level with our fight to stay in it. Hats off to FAU. They were really good today and we wish them well the rest of the way. I’m proud of our results this season and our team should be proud of themselves and their accomplishments."
