MADISON, Miss. – After Monday’s opening round was halted late in the day due to weather, play resumed on Tuesday morning at the Sun Belt Championship. The conference tournament is being held this week at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Mississippi.
With several holes still to play to wrap up the opening round, the Monarchs came into the day sitting in ninth place in the team standings. However, multiple bogeys dropped them down to 14th place as the field continued into the second round.
After posting a 13-over par 301 for its first lap around the par-72 course, ODU shaved off eight strokes with a five-over 293 in the afternoon. That effort moved them up into 12th place with a 36-hole total of 594 (+18). The team is currently one stroke behind South Alabama and seven strokes behind Southern Miss heading into Wednesday’s final round of stroke play.
Arkansas State currently leads the field with a 10-under par 566. Coastal Carolina is in second place at 570 (-6), and Georgia Southern is third with a combined 572 (-4). Louisiana and Troy sit tied for fourth place with a pair of one-over 577s.
The top four teams after Wednesday’s third round will advance to match play on Thursday.
In the individual standings, Jacob Gunther carded a two-under 70 in the first round and added a 73 in the second. He’s currently tied for 11th place at one-under 143. Cullen Campbell opened with a 77, but shot an even 72 on Tuesday to move up 17 spots into a tie for 43rd at 149 (+5). Philip Minnehan is one stroke behind Campbell and tied for 52nd at 150 (+6), Kaijun Ma is tied for 62nd with a 152 (+8), and Jakub Sutor’s tally of 155 (+11) has him tied for 65th.
There is a three-way tie for first atop the individual leaderboard. A-State’s Thomas Schmidt and Jack Maxey and Louisiana’s Eli Ortego are all at five-under par with scores of 139.
ODU will be paired with USM and USA for the third round. The Monarchs are scheduled to tee off from the 10th hole between 10:15-10:51 a.m. ET.
