ODU and VCU Meet for Midweek Game at War Memorial Stadium

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion Baseball is back at War Memorial Stadium this Tuesday as the Monarchs host VCU for a 6 p.m. midweek game.

Ted Alexander will cover the game on Fox Sports Radio 1310 AM and live stats will also be available.

Tickets for single games at War Memorial Stadium can be purchased through the Peninsula Pilots website and go for $10 for general admission, $15 for grandstand seating, and $20 for field level box seats. ODU students with a valid student ID will be admitted free.

Around the Horn

The Monarchs (12-21, 7-8 Sun Belt) have won four of their last five games and earned a 2-1 Sun Belt series win at Georgia Southern over the weekend. ODU won Friday’s series opener 7-6, but the Eagles evened the series with a 5-4 final on Saturday. The Monarchs then put together a 10-run eighth inning to rally for a 15-10 victory in Sunday’s rubber match. The weekend series helped the Monarchs’ RPI as they saw a nearly 30-spot increase from 96 to 69.

Zach Leite is batting .333 while Scotty Young is hitting .314 and Efrain Morales is batting .294. Following them are Kyle Edwards (.293) and Kainen Jorge (.276). TJ Aiken (.241), Kyle Edwards, Tyler Zedalis (.207), and Jorge have all hit four homers. Leite and Jorge are tied for the team lead with 22 RBIs, Edwards is second with 19 RBIs, and Luke Waters (.217) is third with 18. Edwards and Jorge have scored the most runs with 27 and 24, respectively. Jorge leads the team in walks drawn with 22 through 116 at-bats. On the basepaths, Edwards leads the team with 19 stolen bases on 20 attempts. He is first in the Sun Belt in both steals and steals per game at 0.58. ODU is hitting a combined .248 with a .374 slugging percentage and a .355 on-base percentage.

The Monarchs will start Jayce Park, who is 0-3 with a 6.43 ERA through 10 appearances and three starts. He has recorded 13 strikeouts while allowing 11 runs, 10 of them earned, on 16 hits and seven walks in 14 innings pitched. The combined team ERA is 6.53 through 282.2 innings pitched with ODU surrendering a batting average against of .275. The Monarchs are averaging over a strikeout per inning with 297 on the season.

Scouting VCU

The Rams (11-24, 5-10 Atlantic 10) hosted George Mason this past weekend, dropping two of three games to the Patriots. The teams split a Saturday doubleheader, the first game going to GMU 4-2 and the second going to VCU by a final of 10-6. The Rams then dropped a close game on Sunday, 6-5.

The Rams are led in batting average by Adrian Jimenez (.349), he is followed by Trent Adelman (.289), and Nick Flores (.286). Jacob Lee (.275) leads the team in home runs with 9 on the year and slugging percentage .551. He is followed by Nick Flores and Will Henson (.262) who both have hit five long balls. Lee also leads the team in RBIs with 41 which is good for 11th in the Atlantic 10. Sean Swenson leads the Rams in free passes drawn with 21. The Rams as a team are hitting .247 with a .368 slugging percentage, and a .357 on-base percentage. They have been hit by pitches 72 times on the season, which is good for second in their conference.

The Rams have a combined team ERA of 6.62 through 292.1 innings pitched, surrendering a batting average against of .284. VCU has accumulated 275 strikeouts and surrendered 187 walks as a team.

The Series

ODU holds a 93-60 lead in the all-time series. The last meeting saw ODU hand the Rams a 14-8 loss in Richmond, Virginia on May 7 last year. That game was the second of a home-and-home series between the teams in 2024. ODU beat VCU in Norfolk by a score of 7-1 on April 23.

Tuesday will be the first of two meetings between the teams this season. ODU will play a 6 p.m. game at VCU on Wednesday, May 7.

ODU will host Louisiana for three games at Harbor Park this Thursday through Saturday. Thursday’s series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. The teams then return for a 3 p.m. game on Friday and will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
