HARRISONBURG, Va. — Old Dominion lacrosse fell to in-state rival James Madison 18-3 on Saturday afternoon as part of the Royal Rivalry.

James Madison (6-3) came out swinging with a goal from Maggie Clark within the first 20 seconds of the first quarter. Olivia Matthews added onto JMU’s lead with a goal three minutes later, though Kylie O’Donnell put Old Dominion (8-4) on the board after finding the net shortly after. Four more goals would come from the Dukes before the end of the first, all coming from Maddie Epke and Brianna Mennella, to put JMU up 6-1.

Lauren Savage continued to add onto JMU’s lead with a goal under 30 seconds into the second quarter. Kaitlyn Carney followed suit with two consecutive goals, though Monarch Ella Bowen found the back of the net with under eight minutes left of the half. Matthews and Reese Cuviello closed out the second quarter with one goal each, bringing the Dukes up 11-2 to begin halftime.

Both teams came out ready to play defensively in the third quarter, with only two goals being scored and both coming from James Madison. Josie Pell found the back of the net first with almost four minutes left to go, and Payton Root followed suit two minutes later, making the score 13-2.

The Dukes kept rolling in the fourth quarter, with goals coming from Maya Antonakas Mennella within the first five minutes. Jordan Peterson netted one in with eight left to play, though Callie Culhane grabbed one for the Monarchs three minutes later. To close out the fourth quarter, Chloe Bleckley and Carney scored one each to give JMU an 18-3 win.

Bowen, Culhane, and O’Donnell led the way in scoring for ODU with one goal each, with Bowen also accounting for one assist. Goalie Brynn Bowen came away with 13 saves on 37 shots.

Old Dominion continues its road campaign as it travels to Pennsylvania to take on Robert Morris on Wednesday, March 26 at 1 p.m.
