SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Old Dominion women’s lacrosse came away victorious 14-10 at Wofford on Sunday in their first road game of the season.
The Monarchs (2-0) wasted no time in putting themselves on the board, with Megan Hopfensperger grabbing her first goal of the season at the 14:19 mark of the first quarter. Just a minute later, Alex Kulinski scored after a successful clear attempt. Wofford (0-1) would respond with back-to-back goals from Carley Irvin and Emma Stalteri, but ODU ended the quarter with goals from Maddie Sharkey and Sarah Murrell to make it 4-2.
Old Dominion’s Callie Culhane scored in under two minutes of the second quarter off an assist from Hopfensperger, and thirty seconds later Kulinski found the net once again. Bria Foley would respond for the Terriers with her first goal of the season, though the Monarchs would head into the locker room up 9-3 thanks to goals from Ella Bowen, Culhane, and Katie Pfeiler.
Seven seconds into the third quarter Hopfensperger scored again to put the Monarchs in double-digits. Foley and Culhane would each earn themselves a hat trick by the end of the third, where the Monarchs remained up 13-5.
It took until the 8:12 mark for a goal to be scored in the fourth, which came from Wofford’s Carlie Cutinella, who found the net a total of three times in the final quarter. The Terriers turned on the jets, scoring four times in three minutes, though Hopfensperger would grab her own hat trick at the end of the quarter to help ODU come away with a 14-10 win.
Brynn Bowen (2-0) earned the decision after making eight saves in 45 minutes of action, with Hannah Shaddock seeing 15 minutes in the net and turning away four shots.
This is the first time since 2017 that ODU’s women’s lacrosse has started 2-0.
