DORADO BEACH, Puerto Rico – Old Dominion men’s golf concluded play at the Dorado Beach Collegiate on Tuesday and the Monarchs finished their first tournament of the 2025 spring season in 14th place.
“I was disappointed in our performance this week,” said ODU Head Coach Murray Rudisill. “We were not ready mentally or physically. Part of that is my fault, and part is due to the fact that we do not have any indoor practice facilities on campus any longer. It is hard to compete against other universities when they all have really nice indoor practice facilities and the weather in Norfolk has been really bad for getting outside.”
Philip Minnehan led the team and finished tied for 21st with a two-under par 214. After opening the three-day tournament with a round of 75, the senior bounced back with a three-under 69 on Monday and a two-under 70 on Tuesday. Kaijun Ma was next for the Monarchs with a four-over 220 to tie for 54th and Jacob Gunther was two strokes behind Ma and tied for 66th at 222.
Cullen Campbell posted ODU’s best round of the Collegiate, a four-under 68 in the third round, thanks to eagles on the par-5 ninth and 14th holes. The senior ended up tied for 80th with a three-day total of 226. Jakub Sutor carded a 227 to tie for 83rd and James Page, who competed as an individual, shot a 246 to place 102nd.
As a team, the Monarchs combined for an 11-over par 875. Tournament host UNC Greensboro captured the team title at 29-under 835. Southern Miss finished second at 843 (-21), and Illinois State came in third with an 844 (-20).
Winthrop’s Jeff Nelson recorded an 11-under 205 to earn individual medalist honors, and Connecticut’s Alex Heard and Southern Miss’ Ryan Dupuy tied for second with a pair of 207s.
Next up for the Monarchs is the Donald Ross Collegiate Classic, which will be hosted by George Mason at Mid Pines Golf Club on March 10-11.
“We have a couple of weeks to get ready for Mid Pines,” continued Rudisill. “Hopefully we will be ready.”
