BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Old Dominion lacrosse finished its weekend road trip with a dominant 16-3 win over Gardner-Webb on Sunday.
Seven goals were scored in the first quarter from ODU (3-1), coming from Megan Hopfensperger, Kaileigh Flanegan, Callie Culhane, Sarah Murrell, and Alex Kulinski accounting for two goals. Ella Grace Bishop put Gardner-Webb (0-3) on the board with under five minutes to go.
24 seconds into the second quarter, Maddie Sharkey found the back of the net on a man-up advantage, and would strike again at the 13 minute mark. Katie Pfeiler put the Monarchs into double digits and Ella Bowen struck one in on a free position shot. Bishop grabbed her second goal of the game for the Bulldogs and the Monarchs would go into halftime up 11-2.
Julia Butler scored first in the third quarter for ODU, coming just under the eight minute mark. Bowen and Pfeiler followed in suit with one goal each, and Gardner-Webb’s Emma Duchscherer scored the Bulldog’s final goal of the game to close out the third with a 14-3 score.
Kylie O’Donnell struck first in the final quarter while Maddie Sharkey claimed her first hat trick of the season by scoring with under five minutes to go. The Monarchs would come away with a 16-3 win.
Five Monarchs scored two goals or more, with Lydia Laney coming away with four assists. Meanwhile, goalie Brynn Bowen protected the net with 10 total saves.
Old Dominion lacrosse returns home on Saturday, February 22 to compete against Campbell at 5 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
