NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion men’s basketball returns to Sun Belt Conference games this week after playing at Eastern Michigan last Saturday in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. ODU travels to Atlanta, Georgia to play Georgia State on Thursday at 7 p.m. and to Statesboro, Georgia to take on Georgia Southern on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Both games will have live stats and will be streamed on ESPN+. Jack Fitzpatrick and Dennis Wolff will be on the call for ESPN Radio 94.1.

LAST TIME OUT

Friday’s contest will be the first time ODU faces Georgia State this season. Last year, Old Dominion lost two games against the Panthers. On Jan. 11 2024 ODU dropped a 77-70 result and on Feb. 17. ODU leads the all-time series against GSU 19-7.

The Monarchs dropped a 67-63 result against Georgia Southern on Jan. 18 in Norfolk. ODU’s Robert Davis Jr. led the scoring for the Monarchs with 20 points. Sean Durugordon chipped in 11 points and 17 rebounds in the loss. Southern’s Adante’ Holiman fueled the Panthers to victory with his 28 points.

ABOUT ODU:

Old Dominion men’s basketball went 1-1 last week, beating Texas State 75-64 on Feb. 5 before losing to Eastern Michigan 76-70 on Feb. 8. ODU has an 11-14 overall record and is 7-5 in the Sun Belt. The Monarchs are seventh in the Sun Belt standings, 306 in NET ranking, 287 in Kenpom, and have a -7.4 BPI.

Robert Davis Jr. is the Monarch’s leading scorer (15.9 ppg). Davis leads the team in three-point attempts and makes (84-246). The sophomore transfer from UMass averages 3.50 made threes per game which has him tied for fourth in the nation, while his 84 makes from deep are tied for third in the NCAA. In the Sun Belt, Davis ranks third in scoring (15.9 ppg), second in free throw percentage (84.8%), first in total three-pointers made (84), and is first in minutes per game (35.45).

Sean Durugordon is the team’s second leading scorer, averaging 14.8 ppg. The native of Harlem, New York, is ODU’s leading rebounder averaging 8.6 rpg. His average of 3.96 offensive rebounds per game is fourth best in the nation and ranks first in the Sun Belt. This season, Durugordon has recorded 10 double doubles ranking 13th in the nation.He is the team’s second leading free throw shooter, hitting 77.5% at the stripe. Durugordon ranks seventh in the Sun Belt in scoring (14.8 ppg), third in rebounding (8.6 rpg), and sixth in both free throw percentage (77.4%) and field goal percentage (45.3%).

Caelum Swanton-Rodger, a junior transfer from Maryland, swats away 1.54 blocks per game, his 37 blocks this season ranks 62nd in the nation and fourth in the Sun Belt. The center shoots 55.6% from the field and grabbed 100 rebounds this season. 

Freshman Jaden Johnson has started all 25 games this season at point guard. He leads the Monarchs in assists per game (4) which ranks eighth in the Sun Belt. The native of Walker Mill, Maryland is fourth in the Sun Belt in minutes played (33.92).

ODU averages 68 ppg, shoots 40.2% from the floor and 28.3% from behind the arc, making 6.0 per game. They hold a +3.1-rebounding margin and grab 38.8 per game while dishing out 11 assists per game. The Monarchs have swatted away 79 shots this season while swiping 127 steals. In the Sun Belt, ODU ranks first in offensive rebounds per game (14.16) and they have the second-best rebounding offense (38.84). The Monarchs are the 10th ranked offensive rebounding team in the nation, averaging 14.16 offensive rebounds per game.

ABOUT GSU

Georgia State holds a 10-15 overall record and is 5-7 in the Sun Belt. The Panthers are coached by fourth year head coach Jonas Hayes. GSU is ranked 276th in NET rankings, 278th in Kenpom, and has a -5.8 BPI.

The Panthers average 74.7 ppg and shoot 44.0% from the field. The Bobcats shoot 33.8% from deep and 67.8% from the charity stripe, grab an average of 38.2 rebounds per game, and dish 12.9 assists per game. On the defensive end, Georgia State averages 5.6 steals and blocks 2.7 shots per game.

ABOUT GS

Georgia Southern holds a 13-12 overall record and is 5-7 in the Sun Belt. The Eagles are coached by second year head coach Charlie Henry. GS is ranked 259th in NET rankings, 245th in Kenpom, and has a -5.7 BPI.

The Eagles average 74.6 ppg and shoot 42.9% from the field. The Bobcats shoot 34.1% from deep and 65.2% from the charity stripe, grab an average of 37.1 rebounds per game, and dish 13.3 assists per game. Georgia Southern averages 8.1 steals, ranking 62nd in the NCAA and blocks 3.8 shots per game on defense.
