MIES, Switzerland – The 2025 FIBA Hall of Fame Class was announced on Thursday and Old Dominion Women’s Basketball alumni and ODU Sports Hall of Famer Ticha Penicheiro was named as one of nine inductees.
The 2025 Class will be honored at an enshrinement ceremony in Bahrain on May 17.
Selected by the Sacramento Monarchs with the second overall pick of the 1998 WNBA Draft, Penicheiro went on to play 15 years in the WNBA, winning a WNBA championship with the Monarchs in 2005. A four-time WNBA All-Star and two-time WNBA First Team selection, she became the first player in WNBA history to record 2,000 career assists and owns the second-most steals in league history with 764. In 2006, she was named to the WNBA All-Decade Team.
A member of Portugal’s national team, her international career saw her capture five league titles in as many countries (Poland - 2001, France - 2005, Russia - 2007, Latvia – 2008, and the Czech Republic - 2011), an Italian Cup title in 2002, a Turkish Cup championship in 2012, a EuroLeague championship in 2007, and the EuroCup in 2006.
Penicheiro was a two-time Kodak All-American and two-time AP First Team All-American in 1997 and 1998 and helped lead Old Dominion to the 1997 NCAA Championship title game. She was the program’s second winner and the first international player to win the Lifetime/Wade Trophy, presented to the best upperclass women’s basketball player in NCAA Division I, in 1998.
A native of Figueria da Foz, Portugal, she played for ODU from 1994-98. She scored 1,304 points and finished her collegiate playing career as the Monarchs’ all-time leader in steals with 591 and is the second all-time assists leader with 939. She was named the CAA Player of the Year twice as well as the league’s Rookie of the Year.
