Men's Tennis Falls In Tough 4-3 Match At Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The 50th-ranked Old Dominion men's tennis team started a two-match weekend in the Carolinas by dropping a tough 4-3 decision on Friday afternoon at Charlotte.
 
"Another tough one today. Unfortunately, we keep losing these close matches the same way and can't seem to make an adjustment. That's on us coaches. I don't think either team played their best tennis today, but Charlotte stepped up when it mattered and that was the difference today," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller.
 
Doubles saw the Monarchs take wins at the top two spots to claim the team point. ODU started off with a 6-0 win at No. 2 by Codie van Schalkwyk and Cosme Rolland de Ravel over Spencer Gray and Frederic Schlossmann with Charlotte following with a 6-1 win at No. 3 to even the doubles.
 
Connor van Schalkwyk and Jakob Cadonau knocked off the 73-ranked duo of Vasco Prata and Matias Iturbe winning the last two games for a 6-4 victory at No. 1 to give the Monarchs the team point.
 
In singles, the Monarchs got on the board first with Yanis Moundir taking a 6-0, 6-2 win over Frederic Schlossmann at No. 4 for a 2-0 advantage. After wins at No. 2 and No. 3 by the 49ers, ODU regained the lead as Maxime Mareschal-Hay recorded a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win at No. 5 to put ODU up 3-2.
 
Charlotte closed the match with wins at No. 6 and then a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 to take the dual match.
 
ODU now heads to Conway, South Carolina on Sunday to face Coastal Carolina in a Sun Belt Conference match at 10 a.m.
