NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team heads to Lynchburg on Friday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. match against the Liberty Flames.
Both teams come into the match ranked in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings with ODU ranked 42nd and Liberty at 61st. Live stats and live video will be provided by Liberty.
"This matchup has all the ingredients for a great dual match. Two ranked teams, in-state rivalry and a history of very close 4-3 or 4-2 outcomes. We are expecting the same close battles on Friday," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller.
Last year's match saw the Monarchs take the doubles point and a win by Francois Le Tallec in a 4-2 loss at home.
ODU (10-3) is back in action after defeating No. 58, Boise State 4-2 in the final match of the Blue-Gray Classic on February 24 in Montgomery, Alabama. Connor van Schalkwyk, ranked 83rd in the ITA singles rankings, is 11-1 this spring to lead the Monarchs in singles, while Yanis Moundir is 10-1. In doubles, Connor van Schalkwyk and Codie van Schalkwyk, ranked 23rd nationally, are 4-4 at No. 1. Jakob Cadonau and Cosme Rolland de Ravel, ranked 45th, are 8-1.
Liberty (10-5) went 1-2 in the Arizona State Diablos Tournament last week losing to No. 15 Michigan State (4-0), No. 58 Boise State (4-3) and defeating Grand Canyon (4-1). Thando Longwe-Smit and Rodrigo Santiago Arraez leads them in singles wins this spring with eight. In doubles, the tandem of Luis Felipe Miguel and Matija Samardzic lead the Flames with a 9-1 mark. Rafael Marques Da Silva is ranked 111st and is the only nationally-ranked player for the Flames.
The Monarchs will start Sun Belt Conference play on March 13 hosting Troy at 1:00 p.m.
