Men's Tennis Hosts Louisiana and Southern Miss This Weekend

NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 53 Old Dominion men's tennis team returns to the home courts for a pair of key Sun Belt Conference matchups this weekend.
 
On Friday morning, they'll face No. 74 Louisiana at 10 a.m. and then tangle with Southern Miss on Saturday morning also at 10 a.m. at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
 
"The results last weekend showed that anybody can beat anybody in the Sun Belt. We have four top 75 teams in the conference now with Louisiana being one of them. It will be another weekend of tough battles," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller.
 
LAST YEAR VS. LOUISIANA
The Monarchs knocked off then league undefeated Louisiana 6-1 on the road last season. ODU took the doubles point with wins by Jakob Cadonau and Luca Maldoner at No. 1 and Francois Le Tallec with Cosme Rolland de Ravel at No. 2. In singles, ODU took five of the six first sets and won four of their five singles points in straight sets. Cadonau finished off the 6-1 win with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) win at No. 4. ODU leads the all-time series 3-1.
 
LAST YEAR VS. SOUTHERN MISS
ODU defeated Southern Miss 6-1 on April 1 last season to start a road trip in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Monarchs dropped the doubles point and started singles winning five first sets. ODU swept singles as Rolland de Ravel finished off the 6-1 win with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 1-0 (10-7). The Monarchs have won four in a row against Southern Miss and hold a 4-1 lead in the series.
 
ABOUT ODU (13-5, 3-1)
The Monarchs split action last weekend on a road trip to Georgia. They defeated Georgia State 4-1 on March 22 as the Panthers took the doubles point before ODU bounced back with four straight wins. Two days later, the Monarchs dropped a tough 4-3 decision at Georgia Southern.
 
Connor van Schalkwyk leads the Monarchs in spring singles wins with a 14-1 mark and he is currently ranked 111th nationally. Yanis Moundir is right behind at 13-1 with Rolland de Ravel at 9-3. In doubles, Moundir and Maxime Mareschal-Hay leads with a 9-5 record and Cadonau with Rolland de Ravel following at 8-1.
 
ABOUT LOUISIANA (9-7, 2-1)
The Ragin' Cajuns have won seven of their last eight matches dropping a 4-1 decision to South Alabama on Sunday in their last match. In conference, they have defeated Coastal Carolina (4-2) and Troy (4-3).
 
Vasil Dimitriov leads the team this spring with a 9-6 record, while Alejandro Sanchez-Gonzalez is 8-7. In doubles Sanchez-Gonzalez and Sacha Grandvincent are 6-3 at the top spot, while Dimitriov and Leonard Tramolay is 5-4 at No. 2.
 
ABOUT SOUTHERN MISS (7-5, 3-1)
Southern Miss defeated James Madison 4-3 on Thursday to start their trip to Virginia. In conference, they've defeated Coastal Carolina (4-1) and South Alabama (4-3) while losing to Troy (4-1).
 
Henry Lamchinniah (7-3) and Olimjon Nabiey (7-5) lead Southern Miss in spring singles wins. Olle Noltorp is just behind them at 5-3. In doubles, Lamchinniah and Dakotah Bobo have a 5-2 mark at No. 1 leads the team.
