Men's Tennis Travels To Georgia For Pair Of Sun Belt Matches This Weekend

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team hits the road this weekend for a pair of Sun Belt Conference matches in Georgia.
 
On Friday afternoon, they'll be in Atlanta to face the Panthers of Georgia State at 3 p.m. Two days later, the Monarchs will be in Statesboro as they face the Eagles of Georgia Southern at 10 a.m. Live stats and video stream will be provided for the Georgia Southern match.
 
"First road conference matches are always challenging. I think we got battle tested last weekend and hope to continue our momentum. Both teams will throw all they got at us this weekend," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller.
 
LAST YEAR VS. GEORGIA STATE
The Monarchs extended their winning streak over Georgia State to three in a 4-0 victory in the Sun Belt Conference semifinals on April 21, 2023. ODU claimed the doubles point with a 6-3 win at no. 2 by Luca Maldoner and Jakob Cadonau, along with a 6-1 at No. 3 victory by Francois Le Tallec and Cosme Rolland de Ravel. In singles, the Monarchs claimed straight set wins by Le Tallec, Rolland de Ravel and Nicola Vidal for the win. ODU defeated Georgia State in the regular season matchup 6-1 in Norfolk on March 25, 2023.
 
LAST YEAR VS. GEORGIA SOUTHERN
ODU defeated Georgia Southern 4-2 on March 26, 2023 in a battle of then nationally-ranked teams. The Monarchs took the doubles point with wins at the top two spots. Younes Lalami and Brandon Perez garnered a 6-0 win at the top, while Maldoner and Cadonau put ODU up 1-0 with a 6-2 win at No. 2. In singles, Georgia Southern got the first win but ODU answered with wins by Lalami and Le Tallec at the top two spots. The Eagles pulled to 3-2 after a win at No. 4, but Rolland de Ravel had the clincher at No. 3 in a 7-5, 6-1 decision to lock up the match.
 
ABOUT ODU
The Monarchs opened conference play last week with a pair of wins at home defeating Troy (4-2) and South Alabama (4-0). Connor van Schalkwyk was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week after a 3-0 week, including a win over 71st-ranked Mario Martines of Troy which was the first loss for Martines this spring.
 
van Schalkwyk leads the Monarchs in spring singles wins going 13-1, with Yanis Moundir following at 12-1 and Rolland de Ravel at 8-5. In doubles, Moundir and Maxime Mareschal-Hay lead with a 9-1 mark at No. 3, while Cadonau and Rolland de Ravel are 8-1 mainly at No. 2.
 
ABOUT GEORGIA STATE
The Panthers have lost five in a row including their conference opener in a 5-2 decision to Georgia Southern. They had two matches in San Antonio, Texas rained out and dropped a 4-0 decision at Georgia in their last completed match.
 
Naufal Kamaruzzaman leads the Panthers in singles wins going 7-5, while Baran Soyler is 6-5. In doubles, Soyler and Gabriele Datei along with Diogo Morais and Edward Tymes have four wins to lead Georgia State this spring.
 
ABOUT GEORGIA SOUTHERN
Georgia Southern has won five of its last six matches and will host James Madison on Friday before ODU visits on Sunday. They last played on March 10 defeating Chattanooga 6-1 at home.
 
Pol del Castillo leads the Eagles this spring with a 9-5 mark, while Dimitris Paliouras is 8-3 mainly at No. 1. In doubles, Judson Blair and Pierre Mouseca lead with a 6-2 mark mainly at No. 2.

ODU will be home next weekend to take on Louisiana on March 29 and Southern Miss on March 30 with both matches being at 10 a.m.
