NEW ORLEANS - Old Dominion men's tennis freshman Connor van Schalkwyk was announced by the league office on Wednesday as the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week.
A two-time winner of this award, van Schalkwyk was 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles as the Monarchs swept a pair of matches at home.
Against Troy on March 13, van Schalkwyk knocked off then 71st-ranked Mario Martinez 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 for the clinching point as ODU defeated Troy 4-2. The loss by Martinez was his first of the spring season as he entered the match 16-0. In doubles, van Schalkwyk and Jakob Cadonau clinched the team point with a 7-5 win at No. 1 over Martens and Nicolas Simkin.
Two days later against South Alabama, van Schalkwyk got the first singles win with a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Jack Clements as the Monarchs defeated South Alabama 4-0 in a rematch of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Championship final. The doubles match was unfinished as they were tied 4-4 when ODU clinched the team point.
On the season, van Schalkwyk is ranked 111th nationally and sports a 17-4 record this year and 13-1 in singles this spring.
ODU (12-4, 2-0) now heads to Georgia for a pair of matches this weekend starting at Georgia State on Friday at 3 p.m. and then at Georgia Southern on Sunday at 10 a.m.
