Women's Tennis Opens Road Trip With 4-2 Win At Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The 67th-ranked Old Dominion women's tennis team opened a weekend road trip with a 4-2 win on Saturday over Southern Miss in Sun Belt Conference action.
 
"Coming from the thinner air and indoor environment of ODU to the heavier outdoor environment of Southern Miss is not easy. The ball, trajectory, pace, spin, etc. are all affected. Yesterday's practice was rained out so this morning was our first look at the courts. We found ourselves in a tough spot after doubles but were able to learn from the points played and apply the lessons to singles. I am proud of our resilience," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.
 
Southern Miss (4-6, 0-2) took the doubles point by winning at No. 2 by a 6-3 count after taking No. 3 via forfeit.
 
Singles saw ODU (6-5, 2-0) jump back in the lead with a pair of 6-3, 6-0 wins to start. Allison Isaacs defeated Hannah Chambers at No. 2 and Alexandra Viktorovitch knocked off Suhana Das at No. 3 to put the Monarchs up 2-1. Ulyana Romanova brought ODU to the brink of victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Malannia Vashkevish, then followed by Sofia Johnson with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alyssa Richter at the top spot for the 4-2 win.
 
ODU heads to South Alabama for an 11 a.m. EDT matchup on Sunday to close out this road trip.
