URBANDALE, Iowa – In a rematch of an early season contest, the Old Dominion women's tennis team swept all six singles matches to knock off Iowa State 6-1 on Friday afternoon.
"Very proud of what we accomplished today," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla. "We all can put a sticker on our helmet for how this match ended. We are young, but we have guts!"
ODU defeated Iowa State 4-0 in the ITA Kickoff Weekend Tournament regional on January 27 hosted by the Cyclones.
Doubles saw the Monarchs take the first victory as Kira Matushkina and Ulyana Romanova defeated Juliette Nask and Gala Arangio 6-0. Iowa State (2-3) won at No. 2 (6-4) and the clincher at No. 1 (6-3) to claim the early 1-0 lead.
In singles, ODU (3-3) got rolling as Lidiia Rasskouskaia started with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Nask to even the match at 1-1. Romanova put ODU ahead with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Valeska San Martin at No. 6 and Matushkina scored a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 for a 3-1 ODU advantage.
The top three spots in the lineup all went three sets, with ODU responding to first set losses with wins in the second and third sets. Allison Isaacs clinched the team win with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision over Ashlee Narker at No. 3 for a 4-1 advantage. Sofia Johnson followed with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 over Anna Kuearum.
Alexandra Viktorovitch finished the day with a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win over Isabella Dunlap as ODU took the 6-1 victory.
The Monarchs now head to Kansas for a 1 p.m. EST match on Sunday with the Jayhawks.
