Men's Tennis Hosts 757 Doubleheader Wednesday

NORFOLK, Va.
– The Old Dominion men's tennis team finishes off a four-match homestand on Wednesday with a "757 doubleheader" facing Norfolk State at noon and William & Mary at 5 p.m. inside the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
 
"We have a lot of respect for Norfolk State. They maybe have their best team since I have been here," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller. "William & Mary is always a tough match. A rivalry match and they always bring their 'a game'. What could be better than under the lights on Wednesday night."
  
Last season, ODU defeated Norfolk State 7-0 on March 10, 2023. The Monarchs got the doubles point with wins at the top two spots as Luca Maldoner and Nicola Vidal won 6-3 at line one and Cosme Rolland de Ravel and Yanis Moundir took a 6-2 win at line two.
 
Singles saw the Monarchs win four of the five contested matches in straight sets, while Luca Maldoner finished the day with a three-set win at line three over Hugo Massoni Lena 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (14-12). Dating back to 2000, the Monarchs have won all 17 meetings with Norfolk State.
 
Against W&M since 2000, the Monarchs have won the last three matches and nine of the last 10. ODU defeated the Tribe 5-2 last season on February 18, 2023 in Williamsburg. Doubles saw the Monarchs jump out with two wins to clinch the team point. Francois Le Tallec and Rolland de Ravel got the first win for ODU (6-4) with a 6-1 win at line three, while Younes Lalami and Maldoner clinched the team point with a 6-4 win at line one.
 
In singles, ODU jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Rolland de Ravel carded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bill Duo at line four. Following a Tribe win, Lalami gives ODU a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over George Davis at the top spot.
 
The Tribe pulled to 3-2, but ODU clinched with a win by a Codie van Schalkwyk 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at line three over Andres Silva. Le Tallec gave ODU the extra point in a 7-5, 7-6 win at line two over Joseph Brailovsky.
 
Through five matches, ODU is 30-5 in singles play. Moundir leads the team with a 6-0 spring mark, followed by Connor van Schalkwyk at 5-0 and Aryan Saleh at 5-1. In doubles, Moundir and Maxime Mareschal-Hay are 6-0 to lead the team.
 
Norfolk State (0-1) lost its season opener to Temple on January 19 by a 5-2 count. Vladislav Gorbatenko had a three-set win at No. 1 and Deniz Okay won at No. 5 singles for the Spartans points.
 
William & Mary (1-2) opened its season with a 5-2 loss to Florida Atlantic and a 6-1 to Delaware. They rebounded in their last match to defeat James Madison 5-2 last Saturday. The Tribe won the doubles point and then claimed four straight-set wins in singles to take the victory. Oliver Hague and Alexandre Leblanc are 2-1 in singles to lead the Tribe this spring. In doubles, Duo and Konstantinos Raptis are 2-1 to lead through three spring matches.
 
Old Dominion will start a six-match road swing on February 16 when they head up Interstate 64 to take on VCU in Richmond at 3 p.m.
