LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Old Dominion women's tennis team finished a second weekend in the Midwest on Sunday by dropping a 4-3 decision at Kansas.
"A tough result today. I am proud of this young team and the direction we are going," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.
In doubles, the Jayhawks got on the board first with a win at No. 2 by a 6-3 count. ODU (3-4) evened the doubles point as Ulyana Romanova and Kira Matushkina took the last two games of the set to win 7-5 at No. 3. Kansas won the doubles point in a tough 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker at No. 1.
Singles saw Kansas (1-2) take a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 4, but ODU responded as Sophia Johnson recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 to pull the Monarchs to 2-1 in the team race. A Kansas win at No. 2 was answered by Lidiia Rasskouskaia's 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5 to keep ODU down one at 3-2. The Jayhawks clinched the team win with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3.
ODU finished the match with a win at No. 6 by Romanova 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 for a 4-3 decision.
The Monarchs are now off until February 28 when they visit VCU for a 2:30 start in Richmond.
