STATESBORO, Ga. – Freshman Micah Wayland made his first career collegiate goal count for Old Dominion Men’s Soccer as Wayland scored in the 83rd minute to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Monarchs to a 3-2 win at Georgia Southern on Friday night.
With the game knotted at two, Wayland gathered a pass from Michael Eberle and slotted a right-footed shot into the left corner of the goal to give ODU its first lead of the night with seven minutes remaining.
“I’m so proud of the second half performance,” ODU Men’s Soccer Head Coach Tennant McVea said. “The lads responded really well after a slow first half. The commitment to the jersey was the best I’ve seen in years and that is a testament to the progress we have made as a group. I’m excited to get home and honor our fantastic seniors on Tuesday.”
Georgia Southern advanced into the attacking zone and had a corner kick with 27 seconds left but a last ditch shot deflected onto the top of the ODU goal as time expired.
Old Dominion (6-7-2, 2-5-1) trailed 2-1 midway through the second half when Eberle corralled a deflected ball and fired a shot that was saved by the GS keeper, but Timothy Ennin beat an Eagles defender to the ball and just slid home a shot over the goal line to knot the score at two.
Georgia Southern (6-5-4, 2-4-2) opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a goal by Joe O’ Connor.
ODU tied the score in the 50th minute when Owen Ruddy sent a pass to a leading Nicholas Alves who buried home a breakaway into the right corner to tie the score at one.
Georgia Southern outshot the Monarchs 14-11 on the night. Michael Statham made three saves in goal for ODU.
The Monarchs return home for the regular season finale and host James Madison on Tuesday, Nov. 5 in the Townebank Royal Rivalry at 7 p.m.
