NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion men’s basketball team will take on Randolph-Macon on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Monarch’s will be looking for back-to-back wins after starting the season 0-3. The Paul Webb Challenge game will be dedicated to Paul and Charlotte Webb, with a percentage of proceeds going directly to the scholarship in their name.
The game will have live stats and be streamed on ESPN+. Matt Hatfield and Dennis Wolff will be on the call in Norfolk, fans can follow the broadcast on ESPN Radio 94.1.
The last meeting against Randolph-Macon occurred in 1987 when Old Dominion defeated the Yellow Jackets 74-62.
ABOUT ODU:
Old Dominion defeated the Maryland Eastern Shore 73-71 last time out, securing the first win of the Mike Jones era. Devin Ceaser led the way for ODU on the night with 23 points on 55% shooting.
Ceaser leads the team in scoring with 17.8 ppg. on 47% shooting from the field and leading the team in steals per game (1.3). Robert Davis Jr. has started three games this season and ranks second on the team in scoring (16.7). Davis leads the team in three-point shooting, going 14/30 (0.47) from deep. Caelum Swanton-Rodger is the team’s leading rebounder with 27. Swanton-Rodger, a seven-foot-tall defensive presence in the paint, leads the team in blocks (11) which ranks tied for ninth in the NCAA, averaging 2.8 blocks per game.
Mike Jones took over as head coach of the Monarchs from long-time coach Jeff Jones who moved into a mentor role for ODU at the end of the 2023 season. For just the second time in program history, Old Dominion University has hired an alumnus to coach the men's basketball team. Jones played for the Monarchs from 1991-95 and was a part of two tournament championship teams, he returned to ODU after spending this past season as an assistant coach at Maryland.
ABOUT RMU:
The Yellow Jackets have started the season 1-2, coming off two consecutive defeats to Hood College (81-72) and rival Hampden-Sydney (84-77) since beating Salisbury 79-66 in their opening game of the season.
Guard Keishawn Pulley Jr. leads Randolph Macon in scoring (16.3) with guard Jabril Robinson right behind him in the pecking order (16.0). Pulley Jr. ranks first in rebounds per game (6.3), Forward Bryce Scott is right behind him averaging six rebounds per game. Robinson leads the team in assists per game dropping 6.3 per game.
Paul and Charlotte Webb Scholarship Night
Both Old Dominion and Randolph-Macon will honor the legacy of former coach Paul Webb and his wife Charlotte. Webb was the head coach of both programs during his coaching career, spending 19 years at Randolph Macon (1956-75) before coaching at Old Dominion for 10 (75-85). His overall coaching record between both schools stands at 511-257.
At Old Dominion, Webb led ODU to a record of 196-99 and brought the program into Division I. During his 10 years in Norfolk, Old Dominion went to either the NCAA Tournament or the National Invitational Tournament nine times. In his second season (76-77), ODU won a previous state record 22 straight games. At the time of his retirement, Webb had won the sixth most games in college basketball history
Both schools have set up a scholarship in their name and a percentage of the game’s proceeds will be put toward the scholarship. At halftime, former athletes of both programs will meet on the court to honor the late coach, his wife, and their legacy.
